Black by Pearl Jam
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky But why, why, why can't it be...can't it be mine?" It helps make it sadder if you are in high school and have just been dumped when this song came out. |

I very rarely react to a song by feeling tremendously sad but "This Year" by the Mountain Goats (on the most recent album, "The Sunset Tree") really gets to me.

"Last Kiss" orginally by J. Frank Wilson, then covered by Pearl Jam (the PJ version is sadder)

Best: "Tears in Heaven"-- Eric Clapton
Worst: "Seasons in the Sun"--Terry Jacks' version, which, until a few moments ago, I thought was a ballet written by him documenting the impeding end of his life. As it turns out, he was just covering this tune, and he remains alive to this day--unfortunately. |

The drugs dont work- The verve (also covered by Ben Harper on Live from Mars).
All this talk of getting old It's getting me down my love Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown This time I'm comin' down Its either about the artists own drug struggles, or written from the point of view of a terminally ill relative. Either way, it sucks the life out of me everytime I hear it, but in a good, soul serching way... |

I always thought that if I was ever really depressed, I did not want to hear Staind because I might just wack myself. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that people have killed themselves to some of their songs.

all- I think what i've leaned from this thread so far is that songs that move you are aparently very specific for the person, because i've listed to a lot of the suggestions already and thought a lot of them were almost happy songs.
