Gagne has .625 babip against him since coming to the red sox. So he sucks but is pretty unlucky.

[/ QUOTE ]

The thing is, after tonight, his life might be in danger if he takes the mound at Fenway. (somewhat serious)

Well then I stand corrected.

Hey everybody listen up. THE SOX ARE PLAYING AWESOME RIGHT NOW!

[/ QUOTE ]

The point is, its 5 games, so relax, and the run differential indicates they aren't playing .200 baseball, they are getting unlucky.

And it's pretty easy to not worry about losing when you have a 5 run lead or are currently losing!

Not the time to be getting unlucky.

Just because your friend is "the sharpest guy in the business" and he only "said simply" instead of mentioning his reasons for his opinion isn't quite enough to convince me that he is infallible.

[/ QUOTE ]

I asked you to take my word that this guy's opinion carries a lot of weight in the sports betting community. It saddens me that you seem unwilling to do so.

I worked with the guy for seven years, and I've known him seven more since then. You know what's never happened over the course of those 14 years? We've never had a situation like this come up:

ME: Hey, Ed, what do you think that Avalanche/Red Wings series price is going to open at?

ED: I'd make the Red Wings -200.

(later that month)

ME: Wow, the Av's opened at -150. Ed wasn't even in the ballpark on that one.

In fifteen years, I have never, ever, **ever** said the words, "Wow, Ed's opening number wasn't even in the ballpark on that one."

So again, I ask you to trust me: Ed's numbers are always in the neighborhood.

[ QUOTE ]
Just look at how often lines to major events get moved after they are issued. Sports betting isn't that precise even for the biggest experts, at least a little feedback from the market is needed to have your best idea of what a line should be.

[/ QUOTE ]

This paragraph is straight out of Jabberwocky.

When you're making a number, you don't have the benefit of "feedback from the market". How can you get that feedback, until you've posted an opening number??? How can the market react, until you give them something to react to???

That said, he's not totally without feedback from the market. He's been in Las Vegas all summer, taking bets on baseball. He knows who the bettors like (whether sharp or square), and how much they like 'em. He's got his fingers on the pulse of the betting public. He's not blindly picking a number out of the sky.

This ain't some guy on the next barstool. If he typically put up numbers that were "retarded", he would have been fired years ago.

My opinion gets a lot of respect in the 2+2 Sports Betting forum. I was even asked to be a featured guest in the Q+A series of threads there called "The Well". The posters in that forum felt that my opinions on the subject of sportsbetting and oddsmaking matter.

All that is flattering, but I know I'm not the world's foremost expert on the subject.

Fortunately, I happen to be friends with the guy who **IS**. He was kind enough to share his thoughts on this subject with me, and I passed them along here.

Hearing some random internet poster dismiss them with remarks like, "That's retarded!" triggers in my imagination the image of a janitor scoffing at an Alan Greenspan speech about the economy, and walking out of the auditorium, muttering, "this guy's an idiot!".
