[ QUOTE ]
name a group and their signature song...the one song that is most associated with that group 'Signature song' is not necessarily 'most popular song'. It is the song that, if you had never heard it, you would know was by that band. Some artists evolve so much that a single signature song is difficult to agree on. Poster's age is influencing a lot of these choices. And most popular song is also coming up a lot, that is not necessarily a signature song. e.g. Queen: Remains Bohemian Rhapsody. It is quintessentially Queen (Queentessential?). We Will Rock You was a good and well-know song but it does not define Queen. His Purpleness: I think is still Purple Rain. When Doves Cry is too 'different', 1999 not different enough. He's a tough one since every single album is completely different. Depeche Mode: While Violator is my favourite all-time album, it is too late in their career to contain their signature song. My previous choice was Master & Servant but it could also be Blasphemous Rumours. Does anyone else think some people are choosing popular songs over signature songs? [/ QUOTE ] Well based on the OP, I'm not surprised to see most popular songs being listed since those songs are the ones that are most "associated" with each artist. If we are using the "associated" = "essence" definition, then here are some of my choices: Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand (epic, Page's complex guitar arrangement, Bonham's power); Kashmir and Stairway are up there Jimi Hendrix - Machine Gun (surreal, psychedelic, political, searing guitar) Doors - The End ([censored] up) Ramones - Loudmouth (nonsense lyrics, simple, fast, short) Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath Rolling Stones - Starfucker (blues-based, raunchy) SRV - Texas Flood Isn't Beethoven's 5th the one where it goes "duh duh duh duuuuuh, duh duh duh duuuuh"? I think that is easily more commonly associated with Beethoven than Ode To Joy. But that may reflect more popularity than essence I think I suck at this game although it's a more interesting approach than "most popular song" |
