I think the best thing for Grim to do is to talk to the guy's family. Tell them that he could get in a lot of trouble for this and to return whatever amount he hasn't spent and if the difference isn't huge then it will be forgotten. You never know what a phone call from mom or dad can do, even to an adult with a large sum involved.

FWIW a legitimate collection agency will charge around 25-30% (from personal experience). Getting a real professional to track him down and who will not keep all of the money would probably cost more, I'm assuming. It definitely wouldn't be my first course of action.

We are not talking about a 5k car accident settlement. A retainer fee + 30% on a sum this big would motivate the most aggressive of PIs. Of course, I'd make sure it is someone with a reputation to protect so they have added incentive to be on the level. Frankly, if I was grimstarr, I'd probably find someone older and more respectable to even retain the PI and think long and hard about how much info to give about the source of the money. Sad as it is, Grim and his situation has "rob me" written all over it.

I wouldn't talk to his family, I'd have a larger, older, armed and very savvy individiaul do it for me. Have you seen pictures of grimstarr?
