My brother in law was at a neighbor’s house helping him with something when they got on the subject of poker. The neighbor tells him that his cousin is a good player and is on TV sometimes. He then tells him his cousin in Sam Farha. My brother in law asks him where Sam gets his money. The guy says Sam has "investors" who give him money to play with in exchange for the money back at a good return. This seems like a complete clueless or BS answer, I cannot imagine it is true. Maybe this is what Sam told him, but I doubt is true. Kind of odd that Farha seems to be very rich, yet no one knows what he does....even his cousin. Something illegal? BTW I am almost positive the guy wasn’t lying about Sam being his cousin...he was genuinely surprised that he knew who Sam was (he was foreign, and didn’t even think of Sam as "famous"). He only said his cousin played poker for a living and was on TV sometimes, and only said it was Sam Farha after he asked his name, so it wasn’t like he was dropping names to impress him.

Yes, poker players are never staked ever. This does not happen and is totally laughable. |

Spilotro was implicated in the murders of Bill McCarthy and James Miraglia, known to the public as the "M&M Murders." There was a 70% increase in murders in Las Vegas following Spilotro's arrival. McCarthy and Miraglia were two young robbers who had robbed and shot dead three businessmen in the mobster populated neighborhood of Elmwood Park, near Chicago. They were also in debt to Anthony's old boss Sam DeStefano. Their bodies were discovered on May 15, 1962, in the trunk of a car dumped on the Southwest Side of Chicago. Both had been beaten badly and had their throats slit. From McCarthy's injuries, it seems his head was placed in a vise popping out his eye, presumably to persuade him to disclose the whereabouts of Miraglia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Spilotro Yeah, Spilotro was a real sweetheart- why do you contend he got a "bad rap" in the movie? He may not have been as crazy as portrayed, but he was certainly an extremely violent thug. |

I don’t follow the poker world gossip much, but I thought Sam had a lot of money from something outside of poker and was a breakeven (loser??) at high stakes, and played because he enjoys gambling. If that is the case then he didnt get his money from people staking him. Maybe I am way off there and should spend more time reading NVG to stay up on other peoples lives. |
