John Calipari was adament that he isn't leaving and already signed an extension today.

[/ QUOTE ]

Calipari was not drawing interest from UK (even as many other coaches are) due to his questionable past and present regarding NCAA violations, so he made the statement to avoid being rebuffed.

He and most any other coach in the country who isn't Roy Williams, Bill Self, Coach K, or Ben Howland would kill for the Kentucky job.

Edited to add: I'll add Bob Knight, Tom Izzo, Jim Calhoun, and Kelvin Sampson to that list, although Izzo is considered by many a current candidate for the UK job. There may be a few others I forgot but you get the idea.

[/ QUOTE ]

Repeat, you guys got Tubby Smith last time. Obviously coaches aren't falling over each other to get the job. I think a lot of you are way overrating it. It's just like the Bama job, it's almost too hard to please the fans.

[/ QUOTE ]

Tubby Smith was the only coach a call was ever made to. He had Kentucky ties, he was the hot coach at the time, having just taken Tulsa and then UGA to the Sweet 16, and he was black. He was the first and only choice for better or worse and he took it in a heartbeat.

You don't really have any idea what you're talking about.

To my knowledge, no coach in history (or at least since 1940) has turned down the Kentucky job. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I know his history but you guys keep saying how great your program is. Well Tubby, the guy you guys hate now, lasted a long time after his quote on quote peak. He's a good coach but for a program that considers itself to be the "it" program he wasn't the high profile coach Rick was for the most part. Will see what happens.

UNC had a period with 2 mediocre coaches. Bill wasn't bad. Matt was disappointing for the most part. It happens to all programs.

I know I've been hard on Tubby in this thread, and I have nothing against him personally...but the truth is, the only reasons he lasted as long as he did were:

1) He's a nice guy.
2) He's black.

You practically gotta have an executive order in order to fire a black coach these days. If I was a GM/AD I would be discouraged from hiring them for that reason alone.

And very, very few UK fans "hate Tubby." A sizable faction were quite sad to see him go, although I can't say I share the feeling.

The Donovan-UK deal is now being reported as only a rumor on kentuckysportsradio.com. Come to Lexington Billy please oh pleases!

One of the top programs in the country. Not many would dispute that.

For the record, there are very few UK fans that "hate" Tubby Smith.

He was the only coach that was contacted and interviewed. The process went very fast. Rick announced he was leaving for Boston on May 6th, Tubby was on the front page of the Lexington Herald-Leader on the 9th because he reportedly received an offer from UK, and on the 12th Tubby was announced at a press conference as the new head coach. The hire made perfect sense. He was a hot young coach and was a former assistant here under Pitino.

The idea that a black coach can't be fired is laughable.

Agreed. They do it every five years at Arkansas.

If you want proof of how strong the Kentucky program is, just look at the news the last couple of days.

Florida is the defending two-sport champion. Their basketball coach has been there a long time and is in the Final Four again, yet there is some doubt (whether remote or not) and a lot of discussion about whether Donovan will sign an extension or go to Kentucky. Other coaches mentioned have been Tom Izzo, John Calipari and Rick Barnes. Is there any question that UK is in the Top 5, if not the Top 3?

As for my comment about coaches, ADs and media. I didn't say every single person would say that, but the average would be. How do I know? I read the paper, on-line and off. Try it yourself!

[/ QUOTE ]

Just b/c Kentucky can throw the most money around right now, I don't think it makes it a top 5 program right now. John Calipari was adament that he isn't leaving and already signed an extension today. Honestly, I know Kentucky is a top 5 program all time, I just don't think right now I'd consider them one. Nor do I think Indiana is a top 5 program right now but it definitely is all time.

[/ QUOTE ]

Indiana isn't a top program, not because of their recent lack of success, but because the top coaches do not want to coach there. The university and the athletic department are just not run very well.
