I typically buyin for the "default" buyin at a given level. I wouldn't call that extreme shortstacking, although I don't usually buyin for the full amount. I 9 table, so I guess I would rather have $2160 out at the tables at once instead of $3600. My poker roll is around 25k, so it's not like I would be risking my roll by buying in full, maybe it's more of a comfort thing.

However, when I buy into a PLO8 game, I always buy-in for the max.
