vegas tipping is retarded

I tip $1-$2 total on cab rides...NEVER more

I tip 10% on meals...15% on really good food/service

I tip $1 per pot I win in poker...NO MORE...not even if it's $5K.

I've taken 100+ cab rides in Vegas and never received a complaint or had a cabby beg for a bigger tip. I tip 15-20% and $2 min.

Shane,

what is correct tiping ettiqute for a buffet where the waitress say seats you and brings drinks but the food is self service?

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't eat at buffets very often, but I don't see why I wouldn't tip about 20% of the value of the meal if the server was helpful, useful and/or friendly. However, I could see an argument made for there being more room for discretion in terms of tipping buffet servers.

[/ QUOTE ]

perhaps b/c they do a whole lot less/table than they do at a 'normal' restaurant.

[/ QUOTE ]

Right, but so what? Every working person in this world is trying to make money, that's all. Many in this thread seem to embrace this concept that certain people in certain professions deserve to have the amount of money they make or be tipped capped at a certain level, and that therefore we, the customer, must police our tipping practices to ensure that cap doesn't get exceeded.

I just don't have the time or energy to figure out how much I feel like tipping relative to how much the percentage "should" be, relative to the standard of living I think my server should be enjoying, especially when it's for something standard and relatively inexpensive like a buffet meal, where even an extravagant tip wouldn't be a very large number. Rather, I just leave $10 or $20 and don't lose any sleep over it if that turns out to be a high-percentage tip.

Also, how has no one mentioned the fact that you are supposed to tip the dude who opens the cab door for you $1 each time you get in the cab line? Those guys make like 100K/year. Only in Vegas.

Wow you sound like a lot of fun. Let's party. "NEVER more" lol.

Seriously, your post is a joke/self-parody, right?

The American tipping system works out better for the workers receiving tips, even if there is high nit/euro customer traffic. Every so often huge overtippers show up. Last night a guy was tipping $100/pot playing 10/20NL at the Wynn, and another was tipping $30/pot. Two nights before a guy tipped off all his small chips when he got up. ($100 or so)

Without tipping dealers and cocktail waitresses would not enjoy the possibility of making huge windfall profits from the very rich/generous.

...and I think a lot of people in this thread would prefer it that way for some reason.

it cracks me up how many people overtip because they are afraid of appearing to be cheap, insulting the person being tipped or not gaining their respect (oh no, the cabbie won't respect me!). tip what you think is fair. don't be afraid to ask for $1 or $2 back if need be.
