when did the celtics have a chance for 'melo?

I don't remember, but Detroit must have made a trade with somebody to get the 2nd pick that year. I could be way off though

I thought this was common knowledge amongst die hard Celtics fans. As a matter of fact, I'm almost certain Simmons has written about it in his column before. At any rate...

In 1999, the Celtics made a huge 6- or 7- player deal with the Denver Nuggets. They sent Ron Mercer to Denver and didn't really get anyone in return except for former Celtic fan favorite Eric Williams.

What they did get, though, was a future 1st round draft choice in any of the next four years (which would have been 2000-2003).

So what did the Celtics do? Well, of course, they used the pick immediately in 2001 to take Denver's 11th overall pick.

They did this despite the fact that:

a) they had not one, BUT TWO!!!1!!! first-rounders in the draft already (10th and 21st)

b) at the time it wasn't considered all that talented a draft to begin with (especially outside the top 5 picks), and most importantly

c) the Denver Nuggets had been horrible for a bunch of years and there was a decent chance that they would be very bad and potentially have a real high pick in either 2002 or 2003 that the Celtics could take.

So, needless to say, the Celtics used the pick to take some Community College kid named Kedrick Brown (while passing on the likes of Richard Jefferson, Zach Randolph, Tony Parker, and Gilbert Arenas, obv.) and the Nuggets ended up with the #3 overall pick in 2003 in the most talented draft class ever.

tbh, I didn't know that. 1999-2002ish I took off from the NBA. I do recall Kedrick Brown, though. A huge bust. I think he posts on a celtics message board now.

Lol.

I get the Celtics update e-mails, and I use the little G-mail popup notifier.

So I'm sitting here and this little thing pops up and says

"Celtics Beat: Celtics Get #5 Pick"

The title of that little newsletter has never been more appropriate.

I get the celtics beat, too, and I LOLed

Notwithstanding my "just desserts" comment, I heard this proposal to change the draft lottery on the Radio this morning that I thought made sense.

1. Only bottom 5 teams eligible for lottery
2. Each get one ping pong ball
3. After the draw, the winning team gets the top pick and all the other teams draft in order of their respective finish.

So the worst that could happen in any given year would be a draft order of 51234. Since the lottery doesn't completely prevent tanking anyway, this seems a lot fairer.
