[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] You guys have gotta be kidding listing anything other than "Today" as the Pumpkins' signature song. [/ QUOTE ] i think bullet with butterfly wings is better known, although kids today probably don't know any pumkins songs [/ QUOTE ] Christo, I loved the Pumpkins... I'd have to say Bullet would be the signature song for them [/ QUOTE ] guyon this is 100% the correct answer for almost everyone but hard core pumpkin fans, although it can work for them as well. i think this is due to the huge mtv video and that it isn't a ballad. later. i'm only now jumping in and your reply is the first i've seen so i'll just respond to it (mostly because of genesis).
clapton - gotta be tears in heaven on widespread recognition. elton john - isn't candle in the wind one of the best-selling albums of all time? doobie brothers - listen to the music is more uptempo and easily as well-known as black water. genesis though, wow. that's a seriously difficult one. my best guess would be i can't dance because it puts phil out in front and it was "recently" popular in genesis history, but land of confusion probably stands out the most to me. it could just be that the video was so intense for a kid. they have a shocking amount of songs that people would instantly recognize but be unable to identify. |

also, rhapsody sorts songs in terms of play. bob seger got "night moves", which makes sense because it's people casually seeking bob seger that might choose that song. "like a rock" would have to be on top because of the commercials though.
most of the other bands are falling right in line with everything though. smashing pumpkins has 1979 #1, tonight tonight #2... i think subscription services might be superior to itunes in terms of rating because it can hit a lot more casual use. if somebody's buying, they might be more interested. |

I'm thinking like you, NT. Like a Rock is just the Chevy song. I didn't know it was Seger for quite a while. Also, that song hasn't been used by Chevy for a while now. I thine Old Time Rock and Roll is hugely popular. It's on classic rock stations, it's on oldies stations, mix stations, it's used at special events, etc. I think it's much more likely people know that OTRR is Seger compared to Like a Rock.

Astro,
Yeah, I think Candle in the Wind is now Elton's signature, certainly the Elton in the public eye now. It's not very characteristic of the rest of his music, but that's been a developing thread for a lot of songs picked in this thread. |

Green Day- Basket Case, When I Come Around, or Good Riddance? [/ QUOTE ] I gotta put my vote in for Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). That's my all time favorite song, so I am biased, but I would also have to say that's the song I think most people associate with Green Day. Edit: Didn't realize how long the thread was when I posted... sorry to bring up old news, lol. |

name a group and their signature song...the one song that is most associated with that group
'Signature song' is not necessarily 'most popular song'. It is the song that, if you had never heard it, you would know was by that band. Some artists evolve so much that a single signature song is difficult to agree on. Poster's age is influencing a lot of these choices. And most popular song is also coming up a lot, that is not necessarily a signature song. e.g. Queen: Remains Bohemian Rhapsody. It is quintessentially Queen (Queentessential?). We Will Rock You was a good and well-know song but it does not define Queen. His Purpleness: I think is still Purple Rain. When Doves Cry is too 'different', 1999 not different enough. He's a tough one since every single album is completely different. Depeche Mode: While Violator is my favourite all-time album, it is too late in their career to contain their signature song. My previous choice was Master & Servant but it could also be Blasphemous Rumours. Does anyone else think some people are choosing popular songs over signature songs? |

OTRR is a machine in terms of wide usage (radio, events). if you asked ME for a seger signature song it would be the first one i'd think of. is it fair to have something like that represent him as an artist over something deeper like night moves or turn the page or whatever? otrr probably isn't something he'd want engraved on his headstone, but it is kind of his fault that it's so well-known. there are other artists, like simon & garfunkel, that surely have their own favorites but couldn't be embarassed for sounds of silence or bridge over troubled water.

This is my point, to me a signature song is characteristic of the artist.

i don't get the prince/purple rain suggestions. people know it as a landmark album of his and even a movie, plus he was wearing purple nonstop so it had a lot of identity and all of that. but the song? when doves cry seems way ahead of that, as does 1999. the first one i think of myself is still controversy. it tells the whole story, where he started and where he would end both musically and lyrically.
