i don't think wallace's steals come from the post... it's usually the amount of loose balls they pick up... and i'd like to give credit to wallace's defense that he doesn't allow post position 5 ft from the basket everytime or even the majority...
anyway, i thought they were even... i misapplied some pace numbers to eaton instead of wallace... so forgive me for that mistake... in which case wallace probably comes out a hair better... but i don't think it's so obvious where it's some sort of 'practical joke' to think eaton might have been better... |

I can't get behind Robinson above Hakeem. I guess he did have a pretty freakish peak from the 93-94 season to the 97-98, and certainly a great career, but something about him, I just can't do it. Stats be damned (*gasp*). I'm largely being influenced by Hakeem working him over in the WCF. Hakeem in general seemed to step it up in the playoffs, whereas Robinson's scoring generally went down.
Also, I think his 71 points in the final of the season game for the scoring title was pretty bush league. |

Looking more closely at stats I find that I was over valuing Russell and undervaluing Robinson. New Top 5 might look like this 1)Shaq 2)Wilt 3)Kareem 4)Robinson 5)Duncan [/ QUOTE ] Reason #483 why stats can be misleading: They just caused you to drop Bill Russell from your top 5 centers list. |

[/ QUOTE ] Its completely obvious and its not close. The fact that you bring up pace is even more confusing to me....do you not realize that the Pistons had one of the slowest paces in the league and that hurt Wallace's totals?? |

[/ QUOTE ] Russell .440fg% .561ft% He isn't even close to the same league as the other guys offensively. If you want to put him up there then you might as well say Ben Wallace is one of the greatest as well. Championships alone don't cut it. |

I can't believe I'm getting sucked into this, but fine....
Where do you rank Bill Russell among all time big men then? |

The Eaton thing really isn't close. Not that defensive rating is a perfect stat, but Ben Wallace is 6th all time (93.3, Eaton isn't in the top 100 (his score is 100).

Weird stat I just found out while looking up some Russell info:
He won the MVP 5 times. In those 5 years, only twice did he make All NBA 1st team. Strange.... |

btw rubbrband,
Taking account eras into consideration, do you realize that in 1958 Russell was second in the league in FG% with only 45%? Or the year before he was 3rd with 44.2%? Or hte year before that he was 5th with 42.7%? |

[/ QUOTE ] Put Wilt on those Celtics teams, they win the same # of championships. Maybe more. Put Russell on the Warriors--does the famous "winner" make them into a championship team? |
