[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Our starting pitching has got to be better than last year [/ QUOTE ] Hahahahah good one. Last year we had Vazquez, who was awesome during the first half and allowed us to build a huge lead over the Sox in the AL East. We also had Lieber and El Duque. We replaced Lieber with Pavano and El Duque with Wright. Vazquez with RJ was unquestionably an upgrade, but RJ is beginning to show his age. [/ QUOTE ] Wha? Vasquez was great during the first half of the season, and then completely fell apart. He was AWFUL during the latter half of the season, and it continued into the playoffs, where he absolutely choked against the Sox both as a starter and in relief duty. You didn't even point out why or how El Duque and Lieber were big strengths for us. The way El Duque was showing his age late in the season, I have NO problem with replacing him with a young promising pitcher like Pavano. If you're so sure our pitching was better last year, provide some evidence or defense for the claim... |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Look for Pavano to be dominant tonight against the weak offense of the A's, and look for the Yankee bats to hit Zito hard. Look for Mussina to be great against the A's tomorrow, and for Kevin Brown to finally have a good outing against them on Sunday. [/ QUOTE ] k [/ QUOTE ] The ascent begins this weekend. The Yankees are going to reel off a bunch of wins and will be atop the AL East again by July. [/ QUOTE ] The Yankees suck. This thread sucks. LET IT DIE. |

Pavano has worked out well, but Cashman and George signed him after he had ONE really good year.
Up till then he hadn't pitched a full season ever or put up spectacular numbers. And letting Lieber go was awful. Cashman made a misjugement of the pitchers market and the relative pricing. Look at Vazquez now. Look at El Duque and Contreras now. Pitching in NY is more difficult for some people; I understand that. But there is no question that our pitching was better last year. Maybe not on paper, but the results proved it. |

If I was Cashman I would have signed Beltran instead of making a move for Randy. The Defense is PATHETIC. Something needed to be done in terms of CF and Bernie Williams should not have been considered an option coming into this year.
They should have kept Lieber at the one year option and retained Cairo to play 2B. Also Wright should have never been signed. A pitching staff of Mussina, Pavano, Vazquez, Lieber and another FA signing or Brown would have worked fine. The team would be helped so much by just putting in Beltran in CF that they would save over 60 runs over the course of the year. Another option they should look at for next year is moving Jeter to CF. I think he would make a damn good one. He has good general speed but lacks the first step which is detrimental to him at SS. He also has a very strong arm and this would allow A-Rod to play his natural position and then they could get a Koskie to play 3b. |

Move the Yankee captain to CF?
Jeter doesn't want to play CF. He is a shortstop, and wants to play that position. I have no doubt that he would make a great CF, but it's just not happening. A-Rod moved to third in deference to Jeter's stature as the Yankee captain. It is an interesting idea, though. I'll give you that. |
