Default Re: The Answer

[ QUOTE ]
Of course being shot at or blown up doesn't translate to proficiency in a weapon-free fight, but the experience they have is actually being around death (the point I was trying to make). They stare it in the face daily, whereas the UFC fighters grapple with a referee, someone to end it before it escalates to the point of death. The same death those fine soldiers are forced to witness and create every time they are attacked.

[/ QUOTE ]

If UFC fights weren't stopped by tap out or submission, they would not "escalate" to death. The point at which they are stopped is the point where one fighter would have a practically zero probability of living if the fight continued. E.g. the tapping out fighter would pass out or have a major bone broken.

So the only new thing the UFC fighter has to do in a real fight to the death that they have never done before is complete the submission instead of stopping when the opponent taps out.

I doubt the UFC fighter would be nervous about it being a fight to the death, considering what he does for a living changes very little in a real fight. Plus he knows how big his edge is.

Also, I know this wasn't your point, but I'm pretty confident that very few, if any, Navy SEALs would have more than a handfull of purely unarmed combat kills. It's just not what they do. Most of their training avoids this type of situation.

ALL,

IRON MIKE WOULD BIT AN EAR OFF AND WHATEVER ELSE CAME CLOSE TO HIS MOUTH. HE'S ALWAYS BEEN INSANE. INSANE KILLER INSTINCT WILL ALWAYS GO A LONG WAY.

you overestimate mike tyson's abilities as both a boxer and a no rules fighter. tyson's insanity was part of his downfall. give me a stone cold killer like joe lewis, ali even joe frazier would have mopped the floor with tyson.

tyson simply couldn't do what every great champion could, namely get up off the floor and win a fight when he was hurt. tyson would just quit. no heart.

Default Change UFC To Roman Gladiatorial Rules: what happens then?

Ok let's imagine this scenario concerning for the moment only UFC fighters:

Next UFC contest shall utilize the Roman Gladiatorial System whenever a fighter taps out of a submission hold. If the audience majority votes with thumbs up he is allowed to live. If thumbs down, the submission hold is carried through to its brutal completion and his life is then ended on the spot by the victor.

And of course, anything goes as far as unarmed.

Do you guys not suppose that under such a new system some of the current UFC rankings might suffer some very surprising upsets?

1) World's best karate and or other Asian martial arts.

Extremely underestimated. Techniques that have been taught over thosuands of years, fine tuned to precision, streamlined attacks, trained instincts. The BEST martial artist in the world would be the best fighter in the world, hands down. I've watched MMA, and I sincerely doubt that even the best can come close to even half of the best martial artist in the world's speed, strength, technique, or any other attribute essential to fighting. He doesn't need to be ferocious. His extraordinary technique will allow him to easily take down anyone that would challenge him.

2) World's most elite Navy Seal as far as hand to hand combat is concerned.
3) World's best ultimate fighting champion
4) World's best real streetfighter from a gang or whatever.
5) World's best boxer

I think what you're getting at is that there are techniques that would be used in this system that couldn't be used or are not allowed in a UFC fight that would cause upsets.

I think such techniques are vastly overrated. What we're looking at would have to be things like groin strikes, eye gouges, and fish hooks. For these types of techniques, you can't just walk up to a professional fighter that's defending himself and execute them. You'd have to already be in a very dominant position where the opponent couldn't inhibit the execution of the move. If you were in such a position, it would be much more effective to just execute a submission or pound their face in anyway.

In short, the rankings between UFC fighters may change some, but I don't believe it would change a lot. And I think the SEAL would still be out of the picture.

Most ancient martial arts are thousands of years of perfecting techniques that aren't applicable or aren't practical in real fights. This has been shown in real fights. UFC fighters use mixed martial arts. The mix isn't randomly decided on -- it's the mix that's most effective in real fighting.

The main point I'm trying to get at is that if the UFC rules were changed to become death matches, there would likely be upsets within the current rankings (assuming everyone still competes). Betting your life on winning is not the same as as just another day at the office (or octagon).

it's the mix that's most effective in 1 on 1 fighting, which is not the case here.

I can't believe you guys convinced David to nix the boxer. There's a pretty convincing argument that the MMA guy is a lock. I'm convinced. However, the boxer is a close second and the others in the distance.
It's been commented a few times that even the MMA guy is a "world-class" boxer. That's wholly absurd, as is the way boxing is lumped in as a basic skill that the other fighters have in addition to their specialities. While the boxer might be the most one-dimensional, this one dimension is a very scientific and deadly art, that the others don't come close to matching.

Once the MMA guys wiggles in and gets him on the ground it's over though.

Which one of the others could do this?
