Forget the stats for a minute, as hard as that may be for you guys and I say that with all respect but answer my other question. Where was the big bidding war for this guy in the off season. The Sox were really the only team that wanted him.

They overpaid since they could have had him much cheaper.

[/ QUOTE ]

we have no idea who the other bidders were and what the negotiations were like

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh cmon, how can you say that? There was not even a mention of another team interested in him all Winter.

[/ QUOTE ]

much cheaper? lol

the year before he signed a deal that payed him 11m a year and then he had a good year. with baseball inflation, what we are debating over 2m here?

tghe red sox front office (or any other team) isnt blessed like us in that they can make decisions after the fact. really, based on the evidence they had, how can you really fault them for the move? it was either that, go with trot again or find some C level guy....i mean you do realize thats a horrible decision considering the division they play in. they could have 'gambled' with pena, but decided not to....instead they signed a guy with a long track record of being really good (albeit with injury issues) they get unlucky and he sucks this year...if only they had every day fans on the payroll who just 'knew' (with no evidence whatsoever) that he would suck.

He says that J.D. Drew is "expected to sign a two-year, $30 million deal with Boston." It makes sense for the Sox to pay an extra $2MM or so annually to keep the years down on this deal. Meanwhile, in a separate article, Larry LaRue writes, "Boston has offered J.D. Drew a huge contract - and Lou Piniella's Cubs have matched it."

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
Orioles Note: The Orioles, according to a source, have discussed signing outfielder J.D. Drew, who recently opted out of his contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

jdd is not overpaid based on his work in previous years. you are gambling on his injury history, but many of them are fluke one (ball off the hand, for example). he can credibly play center field, hits for decent average, a plus walk rate, and has average-plus power.

guys like that don't really grow on trees. the fact that he is not well-liked is good; his price will be lower even with boras as his agent.

it was a good signing at the time, just like dellucci was for the indians. neither worked out, but drew is much more likely to produce.

One of the idiots on one of the WEEI talkshows was talking about a conspiracy theory the other day whereby the Red Sox were forced to "overpay" for Drew in order to get Dice-K since Boras was his agent, too. I instantly remembered why I don't listen to the station and shut it off.

Mike Lowell 30 hits in his last 60 ABs. Standard?

I was going to make a post about how red-hot Lowell has been lately--but I had no idea!

Doesn't take much to put the kibosh on a hitting streak around here, does it?

I stand by my statement that they overpaid for him. Why were the Dodgers so happy to let him go? Did you read about any team, any team whatsoever saying we really tried to get Drew but the Red Sox just outbid us for him? No, because there wasn't a single team outthere besides the Sox interested in him at big bucks.

I'll pose this one for you. This offseason, if the Sox let it be known that Drew can be had for nothing and they will pick up $ 4 million per year of his salary. There will be no takers.

well no [censored]. but the sox signed him without the knowledge that 2007 would be the worst year of his career.

when drew was signed the ppl that thought it was a terrible signing thought it was terrible bc they didnt think jd drew's established levels of production were worth much. those ppl were wrong because drew was really fkng good from 2000-2006 or so. drew having a [censored] year that absolutely nobody saw coming doesnt really vindicate those ppl
