At what limit does the rake become less insane? It seems like microstakes players get pwned by it.

If you are playing limit the rake is an absolute killer. I once sat with a guy for an hour playing like .25/.50 HU. Neither of us topped off (i.e., we each bought in for like $50 and never rebought) and at the end of that hour we had some insanely low amount between us (like $90).

Duh, I never answered your question. As I recall the rake started getting more palatable at like 1/2...it has been a long time since I have played, but I remember breaking up from .5/1 to 1/2 and noticing a huge rake relief.
