[ QUOTE ]
shaniac, "What do y'all tip on that $40 ride?" $10, maybe $20 based on a combo of how much I am winning / how cool he is / how drunk I am. I also find it just as surprising as you that people aren't ridiculously free with their money in Vegas. When in Vegas, the value of money changes drastically for me and I overtip like crazy. [/ QUOTE ] Diablo, you're a millionare right? You know how many people who post on these boards are millionares? Right... So what you're saying is totally insane and since people here respect you, they are trying to live up to this standart of "oh I am so BALLA I tip 30% I don't care". WHAT? What kind of money are you people making? I know for a fact most poker players don't make more than 100k/year (out of the people who actually win in poker). So I'm going to go around tipping a waitress 5$ each time? That's what... To go hang out play some poker and come back home, I've spent 50$ on tips alone? For every pot, every drink, every ride, every bartender. ... With great power comes great responsibility. Diablo most people are not millionares and don't have money to throw to people who are rude and drive a cab for a living. This idea of tipping as a standart is really silly and if we are to do a poll, I'd think most people don't tip almost anywhere, except for restaurants WHEN it's good service. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Almost every dealer prefers tips as bets - chance for double the tip! [/ QUOTE ] god they're so dumb. [/ QUOTE ] Lol it's true though, almost every dealer will tell you they prefer the action. [/ QUOTE ] IME (somewhat limited) people tip MORE when they are giving the tips as bets, and therefore the dealers are NOT dumb for prefering this. [/ QUOTE ] Many times, I have had a $5 chip and said, "You want the tip now or should I gamble it for you next hand" and they usually accept the latter offer. |

I'm a little confused on how this "gamble with their tip" thing works. Obviously at blackjack or craps it's easy, but how does it work in poker? You put their $5 in next hand... what if you fold preflop to a re-raise or something? Enlighten me.

[/ QUOTE ] Many times, I have had a $5 chip and said, "You want the tip now or should I gamble it for you next hand" and they usually accept the latter offer. [/ QUOTE ] I've seen that, too. The dealer says to gamble it, they win. Then the next hand the guy is all excited about how fun that was gambling for the dealer so he tips another $5 just to do it again. Etc. Or, they lose, and the guy feels bad that he lost the dealer's tip so the next hand he puts down a $10 and goes "double or nothing". Or whatever. Just the general feeling of action and gambling seems to increase the tips. It's like giving action to get action. No one wants to tip a nitty dealer. You want to tip a dealer who participates in the fun and creates more action. Not saying that the dealers really do it for a rational purpose, but I really don't think it's very -EV for them, if at all, due to this observation. |

[/ QUOTE ] hmm - haven't really noticed what other people do, but my tips are always way bigger than anything i bet for the dealer. i very rarely bet for the dealer anyway - it brings bad luck! i do, however, like to preemptively tip before the shoe starts because that brings GOOD luck. |
