It wasn't answered, I looked around the interweb for a few days.
Oh but I came up with a really good idea. One of the clues was "What would have immediately preceded this?" and everyone had all these cultural ideas. However, the clear answer to that is A FRIGING SNOWFALL, as it fits with the other clues.
