Same thing, blah blah. [/ QUOTE ] No, Im pretty sure the statements: "Racism will always exist" and "Racism will not always exist because people will one day all be of the same race" are pretty clearly NOT the same thing |

I find some of these replies stupid. "Act like an adult and just eat it." Yeah, like vegetarians would just eat the meat that we put in front of them. Don't be a pussy and just eat it if you think it's a peice of [censored]. Tell them you don't eat this kind of food and if they are insulted put your meat in their face.

I love this thread.
I don't hate vegetarians, but I think they are often self-righteous and pompous about their choices, e.g., all of Elaine's references to "eating flesh," and the like. I also find some vegetarians ridiculous, i.e., the ones who believe that animals have "rights" and who somehow equate dogs, cats, cows, etc. with humans. "We all share the same earth," garbage like that. |

Paluka,
I think there are a few separate things here that are all getting lumped together. Vegetarian for religious reasons - OK, that's everyone's own deal. Vegetarian for health reasons - OK, one can make a case for all sorts of health-related diets, including this one. Vegetarian for environmental reasons - raising animals uses xxx resources etc., again some decent cases can be made. Vegetarian for animal cruelty reasons - here is where it starts to get a little shaky for me. If that's the reason, then don't eat certain stuff, but to not eat all meat for this reason seems odd. Vegetarian because killing animals is bad - this one is where I just don't get it. It's like, look, there's an animal kingdom, there's a circle of life, there's a food chain, there's evolution, etc. Animals are not people, simple as that. I think a certain contingent of vegetarians tend to forget that. |

I am well aware that animals aren't people- I don't see how that would make me want to kill them. As for the food chain, who cares? Humans are obviously well beyond the food chain at this point, in the same way that science/technology/progress/whatever has freed humans from many of the limitations that nature once put on us. Saying that we should eat meat because of the food chain is like saying we shouldn't fly because we weren't born with wings. |

To be fair, I don't think Elaine is trying to impose her morals on everyone else. Its seems like she supports the right of people to eat meat and would prefer that it involve as little cruelty as possible.
The reason why we omnivores get a little annoyed with some vegetarians is the holier than thou attitude that sometimes comes along with being a vegatarian. I would say the holier than thou group is not the norm, but it can still get a little annoyinng hanging out with someone who is making me feel like a bad/inferior person who does not care about animals just because I eat meat. (I don't know Elaine at all, so this is not about her) Everyone is a hypocrite. Its just a matter of how much hypocrisy each person is willing to accept. |
