I also think that Briere is worth $5 million for that same reason. He is easily the clutchest player on the Sabres.

Wow, I guess the GM agreed. Keeping Briere $5M for 1 yr...unreal!

What? Briere is worth $5M easy. If you extrapolate his stats from last year over 82 games, he's one of the top point getters in the league. He also had a fantastic playoffs.

Briere would have been on pace for a 99 point season if he played all 82 games. I think Briere is a great player and the new NHL rules have helped him, but considering he never scored more then 65 points a season before this last season I can understand why people think $5 mil is too much.
All things considered though I think it's a good signing for Buffalo.

Blackhawks trade Kyle Calder to the Flyers for Michal Handzuz.... link

Not sure why the Hawks did this, I think it is a bad trade for the them, but... hey, it's the Blackhawks so I am not surprised.

Sabres walk away from Dumont award

Guess Darcy couldnt even get a pick at that price point. Oh well, thanks for the service JP, no way was he affordable at that price.

Now Darcy needs to tie up Miller long term.

The Calder-Handzus trade is one of those rare deals that feels like it's worse for both sides. Kyle Calder isn't that good, but he's good for a bad team 'cause he puts up a few points and plays okay. On a good team he gets exposed as not quite good enough. Michal Handzus is one of those players who won't do well on a bad team because he's just not that good an offensive player and too much will be asked of him.

As for Dumont, I hope any team would walk away from that award - there's no way that's the right price for JP Dumont. I doubt anyone was willing to deal for him either.

Darcy said he talked to every single team, and he said he could have traded, but he would have to take on players that either cost money or didn't fit, or both.

Dumonts a decent player. Not worth 3 mill - but a 50+ pt/yr type of guy. I think the rumors have the red wings signing him, but i could see vancouver picking him up. He should have a salary around 2-2.5 mill (?), and could play on the canucks 1st line.

Nagy was awarded 3 mill in arbitration. I dont know west coast players as well- is he in the league of tanguay/briere/ gomez? Why wasn't he awarded more?

Some wacky news - Penguins star prospect Evgeni Malkin left his Russian club with whom he has a contract and is thought to be hiding somewhere in the United States. Metallurg Magnitogorsk was demanding an outrageous sum for Malkin to be allowed to play in the NHL this year, so he just up and left their training camp - his whereabouts are now unknown.

Owen Nolan signs with the Coyotes - who knows how much he has left in the tank.
