Jesus Christ that is terrible ... the play not the call. The call was the right call, totally unnecessary play. Just give the games away, Mets.

question because I'm too lazy to look at the rule book:
What's the difference between what Marlon did and bowling over the catcher? I assume there's a specific allowance for it for the catcher only? |

don't know what the rule says word for word, but i would imagine its because the catcher generally blocks the plate, and you have a right to get to it. the second baseman wasn't blocking marlon from getting to second base.

[/ QUOTE ] I suppose. You could then interpret the ARod slap play to be legal, in that he was trying to clear a path to the base. Honestly, I don't have a problem with this call in isolation. The main problem I have is with how subjectively these types of judgment calls are often applied. Looks like 709(d) is the rule: [ QUOTE ] (e) If, in the judgment of the umpire, a base runner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead. The umpire shall call the runner out for interference and also call out the batter-runner because of the action of his teammate. In no event may bases be run or runs scored because of such action by a runner. [/ QUOTE ] Players "deliberately interfere...with the intent of breaking up double play all the time". Sliding late, sliding to the side of the bag with legs sticking out, etc. It happens even more often at home plate, on home-to-first DPs. The catcher's legs always get clipped. But because those are rarely last plays of a game, they don't get called as interference. Oh well. Win today and we're back to 4 with some breathing room. Either way, it's the Phillies, so it's likely one big tease again, as they do every year. |
