[ QUOTE ]
I just watched Fitzcaraldo and the documentary about it called Burden of Dreams. Both films are excellent. I like the documentary because it shows how everything you see on the film is pretty much real, and it is awesome seeing the parallels between Fitzcaraldo and Herzog, both very stubborn about fulfilling their crazy projects. Fitzcaraldo was a treat to watch and I highly recommend it. [/ QUOTE ] yeah, it's pretty insane how they actually pulled that boat over the hill. herzog was better back then: he's lost some of his edge. |

alpha dog: inspired by true events.
***spoilers*** it really sucks that stuff like this happens. it's sad that so many lives got [censored] over what began as mostly harmless. 1200 lousy dollars and an innocent kid gets killed and a whack of others get their lives ruined. so messed up. as for the film itself, solid acting from this mostly young cast. anton yelchin, as zack, was particularly excellent. jt was decent: a little off at the beginning, but really owned his role toward the end--when it counted. |

It remains interesting. I hope the guy keeps making movies for a long, long time to come. |

I saw Incident at Loch Ness, and Grizzly Man. I've heard some good things about his other recent stuff, and really want to take a crack at that, too.

After watching Aguirre finally, and knowing a few of his other movies (and I so need to see Fitzcarraldo), it's my opinion that Herzog is probably the greatest living director at this point in time.
I'm sort of embarrassed about waiting to see Aguirre and Tiz so long now - but my excuse is they are pretty hard to get. Aguirre I had to borrow. Maybe we need a thread about 'what movies are you embarrassed not to have seen, and why?' |

I"m glad you like him too. He's pretty damn good stuff. Don't miss Burden of Dreams, or his commentaries, or the short film Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe. He used to do lots of crazy stuff, and at one point he swore he would eat his own shoe if something didn't come out right. I forget what it was. Anyway, he eats it. On the film Even Dwarves Started Small, he was apologetic that some of the dwarves were doing stuff that could get them hurt. So to show them his heart was in the right place, he threw himself into some cactus.

blarg, yes, but did you like incident at loch ness? though, that's maybe not the best example to use, as he wrote but didn't direct it. invincible is really the one that i was referring to. it's still fiction.
carter, ok, i'm convinced. i have to watch aguirre, today. edit: i kind of suspect i'll come back and tell you i didn't like it. we'll see. |

If I remember correctly, about 6 months-1 year back, I was listening to Mark Kermode's Film Review podcast, where he talks about interviewing Herzog on a hill near the freeway. They are talking, and there's a cracking noise. Kermode doesn't get what it is, and the convo goes on, then he notices blood on Herzog's leg, and asks him what it is.
"Oh, I just got shot," Herzog says, cool as a cucumber. Adriveby took a shot at him with some small-bore rifle (or something like that), and he just continued the interview anyway. That made some impression on me. Herzog has really been around, I'm thinking. |
