[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Actually anyone is allowed to shower with anyone they want, but shouldn't be required to by their job. And gays are the small minority here, society should not have to bend over (haha) backwards to accommodate them. They should be the ones to compromise, not straights. [/ QUOTE ] This is so ridiculous it makes my eyes hurt. Dude, you're a team. Get over it. Gay men aren't stupid enough to disrupt an important basketball franchise and risk a $25 million salary just to lustfully gaze upon your ass. You're a team. Get over it. If there's a problem, someone can report it or talk to the coach and isolated incidents will be handled. Otherwise, be a man, accept your gigantic NBA salary, and find a way to deal with having a gay teammate. Jesus. Neanderthals. [/ QUOTE ] PJ, Why are you assuming people act rationally? Do you think Mike Tyson before commting rape thought to himself you know I could go to jail and lose a lot of money? Or Artest when he charged into the crowd? Or countless other examples. I basically agree with what Golden Rhino said I would be uncomfortable showering with a gay guy. I don't think legislation or multiple bathrooms or any measures like that are necessary. What is ridiculous is when people like you are acting like it is ridiculous and asinine to be uncomfortable showering with a gay man. Oh BTW please don't accuse me of being a redneck Neanderthal bigot, thanks. |

[ QUOTE ]
What is ridiculous is when people like you are acting like it is ridiculous and asinine to be uncomfortable showering with a gay man. [/ QUOTE ] I didn't say it was ridiculous and asinine to be uncomfortable. I just said that that kind of discomfort often indicates a certain type of ignorance or prejudice that lies at the heart of what Tim Hardaway said. It doesn't *always* indicate it, but it often does. And my point was underscored when UATrew started saying that "just because you're born that way, doesn't make it good." Then compared being born gay to being blind. Look, some people are simply homophobic. I'm not trying to change that, nor can I. It's just the way it is. At least Tim Hardaway is admitting it. EDIT: One more thing. UATrew said that members of a minority are under the obligation to compromise for the benefit of the majority. I wonder if anyone who has ever been in a minority group has felt that way too. I'm assuming no. I'm assuming he thinks that way because he's always been a member of the majority. |

Of all the "kinds of discomfort" that indicate a certain type of ignorance or prejudice that lies at the heart of homophobia, showering naked with a gay man is pretty far down the list. I mean really way down it.
I think ultimately it's not that big of a deal. If it were me, assuming it's a teammate I get along with, it wouldn't bother me as long as it stays platonic. If I were a hate-filled NBA player, I'd look to my salary for comfort. But I still don't think it's unreasonable for anyone to be uncomfortable in that spot. |

But I still don't think it's unreasonable for anyone to be uncomfortable in that spot. [/ QUOTE ] Okay, maybe it's not unreasonable, but it's something they need to get over if they're going to be professionals on a team. It's like the debate in the '90s over the "don't ask don't tell" policy for the Army. You're a group banded together, a team charged with a task worth winning. You should be mature enough to get over petty fears and prejudices and work as a unit to achieve victory. NBA players are paid handsomely to do so and need to just get over it. And that goes for both gay and straight athletes. |

[ QUOTE ]
As much as people want to say it, they are not born gay, it is a decision they make. Much like religious preferences. [/ QUOTE ] I believe people are born as blank pages. They dont know their sex and cant even imagine what sexuality is when they are born. Society does a good job at molding people into what they should be. Either male or female. Some people are molded by their life and experiences into being gay and if that happens so be it. Thats why this whole you werent born gay argument is so stupid. No one is born anything. As far as people saying stuff like, stop being gay and stop doing gay stuff. This would be like someone going up to me and saying, "hey you stop having sex with women and stop doing whatever it is you enjoy doing the most, it disgusts me." My reaction would be to think you are an idiot and ignore your suggestion. Others would probably beat the crap out of anyone who said that. I am kind of shocked more gay people dont beat the crap out of gay haters. Edit: By people I forgot to quote Hardaway. He said, people shouldnt do that. Crap lazyness got the best of me, too late to look for the quote. |

A few points:
Homophobic is not even a scientific term - no psychologist would use that - not approving of a gay lifestyle doesn't mean a fear of it - which is what "phobia" means. Homophobe is just a made up word by PCers. Also, the comparison to women in the locker room is not accurate - nor is comparing anti-gay to antiblack, because many people consider being gay to be wrong morally. Agree or not, that is the basis of the anti-gay argument. Hardaway even said he didn't "agree" with someone choosing the gay lifestyle at the start of his comments. I have never heard someone say that "being black was wrong" - even by the KKK. His only mistake was using the word "hate", but other than that, it's not like he's alone in these views. |

[ QUOTE ]
Oh wait this isn't a public school, I don't have to be indoctrinated with your PC BS. [/ QUOTE ] You are absolutely the poster child for people who think they can say any idiotic [censored] that pops into their heads and then defend it by explaining how non-PC they are. Okay, you're not PC, but so what? You're just using that as an excuse for bigotry. I'm not terribly PC myself, but that doesn't mean I have to be okay with garbage. I agree with almost everything DrewDevil has posted here. I agree that it makes sense why someone would be uncomfortable showering with a gay teammate, but that they should do it anyway. I wish there were some openly gay NBA players. |
