Wookie,

so i guess the question is: do the problem posters just follow the content? they seem to have migrated to ATF.

I don't doubt that the tl;dr crowd can have a reasonable discussion about politics (or anything, for that matter), but i do have serious doubts that if we have them on a semi-regular basis (to the point where they become a noticeable sub-set of the larger content) the loathsome posting that's so abundant over there won't seen be upon us, not only in political threads, but other ones as well.

i kind of think of them as locusts or termites. give them and inch and before you know it they've destroyed you. that's harsh, but you get the idea.

Pryor,

IMHO, when we first started allowing politics here after Politics closed, it was pretty messy. However, we stood firm in the threads, and after a couple failures, I think it worked decently. I think that with a tight watch, it can work, and I'll keep my eye on political threads. So far, we've had one.

Additionally, I plan on automatically moving especially inflammatory topics straight to Politics, e.g., abortion, anything expressly partisan, etc.

I urge you to keep an open mind, and if it gets too ugly, we'll talk again. It's not too hard to lock/move some threads, kindly ask inflammatory posters not to post here, or to change my mind and disallow politics entirely.

Wookie,

fair enough. I'm not convinced, but I'm willing to see how it goes. I hope you're right, though.

pryor,

When the politics forum was briefly closed, we invited political posters in... when the politics forum was reopened, political posters were reminded that they could continue to have well thought out political discussion in TLDR... this situation has not changed since then...

We now have a new type of thread in the Lounge, a Private Discussion:

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...Number=5853374

I don't anticipate these springing up too much, but for topics that might get a little ugly if left in the wild, hopefully it'll be a good new format. Feel free to let me know what you think.

Seems kind of odd and exclusive. Isn't there an El D forum for that kind of thing? Or wouldn't an exchange of PM's work? Seems the opposite of a forum's purpose to lock people out of a discussion.

Wook, I like the topic idea, though I'm not sure that limiting discussion in a TLDR thread is a good idea.

Maybe a compromise, create a 2nd thread, so instead of Loungers PMing you with questions on the private discussion, they can post them there and engage in normal discussion on the topic and comment on the PD, in addition to the limited Private Discussion thread?

I think that for this first time, I'm going to stick to my guns and do it just as I've stated, although perhaps after it's been rolling for a while I'll consider opening things up or starting a parallel thread. We'll refine further if we do this a second time.

That's up to Boro. He keeps saying it will, but he's either been too busy to post, loves the politics forum more than us , or is writing a text book for us.
