10 team standard 5x5 roto. 2 keepers. I'm picking 6th. I had been leaning towards A-Rod and Carlos Lee, but PFM likes Jake Peavy better. [/ QUOTE ] i would keep peavy over lee, but it's close. why is it "clifford" floyd, but still b.j. upton (not even his real initials)? others have their names shortened or nicknames. also, they misspelled kristin benson. |

[ QUOTE ]
I am in a 12 man head to head league where you play same team all week. The draft is this Sunday. We are playing with 20 players (9 starters with dh and other ten on bench) and 1 pitching staff. If I am calulating correctly it seems to me that under the scoring system we have the pitching staffs projections of Mets, Red Sox, Cubs,Yankees and a few others would get me an avg of of14-16 pts a game ( I divided there total projected yearly outpout by 162) and say a player like Pujols who is projected at 545 pts would avg me 3 pts per game. Is it safe to say that a top notch staff is 5 times more valuable then a premium player? I also know how my friends are and hardly any will be taking staffs first. I think it is the right move. Now which staff should I take? I will create a poll for that thanks again. Listed below is the scoring system [/ QUOTE ] you have to approach this from the correct angle. what's important is not whether player A or player B will generate more total points. it's whether you would be better off with a combination of player A and player Z (a late round pick who plays the same position as B) or players B and Y (ditto but for A's position). in fantasy football, peyton manning is generally projected to rack up the most fantasy points in a league where passing TD are worth 6 points. this doesn't make him the first pick, because the difference between manning and the 10th best QB is substantially less than the gap between tomlinson and the 20th best RB. by drafting manning above LT, you're essentially saying you would rather have the combo of peyton and a weak RB than LT and a weak QB. does that make sense? getting back to your league, you have to compare the gap between the best and worst pitching staffs (only those who are actually good enough to play in this league) to the gap between the best and worst hitters. all that said, i find it likely that the top pitching staff will be the most valuable pick in this league -- assuming you can correctly identify it. |

[ QUOTE ]
- steals guys are worth much less in your setup, unless they also rack up a ton of triples. - empty batting average hitters like ichiro or michael young lose a lot of value because singles are worthless - power hitters are worth more because of the added home run and doubles bonuses - pitchers with stamina (livan hernandez, for example) who can get complete games are worth a significant bonus as a general strategy, it's usually best to take hitters early on, but this isn't a hard and fast rule. if johan santana is being ignored by everyone else, don't be shy. also, i wouldn't ignore closers. 5 points per save is a significant number, and a bad closer in this setup is still worth more than a good middle reliever. [/ QUOTE ] ok, i've got a couple follow up questions: 1. Is Reyes worth the 5th pick in this setup? Santana? Word is that the first 3 picks are going Pujols, Soriano, Howard, so I'll definitely have my pick from ARod (must pick if he's there?) Reyes, and Santana. 2. How would taking a ranking list for a "standard" list and crossing out the names of people who would be less valuable (such as young and ichiro) in my point system work? I assume that other managers would overvalue these players and would take them rounds before they would be considered good actual value, right? 3. When referring to closers being "worthless", I was comparing them to starting pitchers. Assuming all other things equal, a middle of the road starter is going to be worth more than a middle of the road reliever because of 2 start weeks, right? as a wannabe member of the baseball elite, thanks for this thread! |

Where should I set up my league, ESPN or Yahoo or other? Would anyone be willing to join a league I already set up, or does anyone have spots left in a league that I could join? I want to play 4 or 5 leagues if possible but I've previously only played Fantasy Football (although I follow baseball more closely than I follow football, go Mets) so any/all help/advice is much appreciated.
If anyone wants an extra league to join and can offer advice on how to set it up commissioner-wise, here's my league so far (so far it's just me... nobody in OOT seems to want to join) http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo....rotherbaseball |

i joined baseball prospectus, wow i better start paying attention in statistics class
as previously mentioned, my league's draft is slugger weighted: ![]() my draft was this evening, 10 teams, start C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, UTIL, P, P, P, P, P, P, and 5 bench spots (15 starters + 5 bench = 20 total roster spots) snake draft, i had the 5th pick, 20 roster spots, here's my team by position with round taken in parentheses: C: Olivo (18) 1B: Teixeira (2), Fielder (6), Helton (10) 2B: Utley (1) 3B: Aramis Ramirez (3), Chad Tracey (19) (lol brandon inge got taken in the 12th) SS: Hall (7) OF: Holliday (5) OF: Carlos Lee (4) OF: Granderson (17) P: CC Sabathia (8) P: Sheets (9) P: Lackey (11) P: B Myers (12) P: Hamels (13) P: Cain (14) P: Kelvim Escobar (15) P: Mussina (16) P: Freddy Garcia (18) I didn't mean to pick all starting pitching, but the clueless people in my league started drafting closers in the third round. I'm pretty happy, I hope to package helton/fielder and somebody for a five star outfielder sometime in the near future. Do I get an attaboy? |

Yahoo free league, 10 teams max.
Overly complicated categories: R (1), 1B (1), 2B (2), 3B (3), HR (4), RBI (1), SB (.5), CS (-.5), BB (.5), IBB (.5), HBP (.5), K (-1), GIDP (-2), E (-1) IP (3), W (4), L (-4), CG (2), SHO (2), SV (2), H (-.5), ER (-1), HR (-.5), BB (-.5), IBB (-.5), HBP (-.5), K (1), SB (-.5), GIDP (1) Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3x OF, 2x Utility hitters, 3x SP, 2x RP, 3x Any P, 5x bench, 2x DL Each hitting position caps at 162 games played. Pitchers get 1250 innings combined, then no longer get points. What are some general guidelines when I pick players? I'm not really a baseball fan, but I like the idea of beating the guys who watch a lot of games. I looked at your advice for KKCountry, but I have many more stats to worry about than him, so I'm posting. |
