You guys sit at the same table and talk in IRC about players while you're doing it? That doesn't seem ethical at all.

Very unethical.

However, talking in IRC and telling him to quit freaking tapping the glass is very ethical.

wtf? When I'm playing live NL next to a buddy in Vegas, is it unethical to quietly talk about hand strategy after a hand? Am I not supposed to say stuff like "wow, that dude is really aggressive, he was probably bluffing" after the hand? We aren't sitting in IRC saying "ZOMG DOES HE HAVE A SET, QUICK GIVE ME ADVICE." I don't see anything unethical in pointing out the tendencies of one player to another. Perhaps I also shouldn't tell him when I'm sitting at a fishy table where he could probably make some money? This is ridiculous.

agreed....talking while in the hand about what to do, unethical

talking about whatnot while not in the hand, ethical

that being said, this is for money.

My roommates and I would often talk about the hand in play together when one of us was playing and the others sweating over the shoulder. Does this make me bad? maybe

no, because you aren't disclosing any information about your hands to other active players. What could be considered unethical about this in the absence of collusion?

It's different doing it in IRC because the other guy doesn't know you're doing it. Talking strategy at a live game, the guy can decide to leave the game, or at least he can hear that you're talking about him and what you're saying perhaps. Players talking via IRC about others' play online = unethical. It's not like a huge violation, but I wouldn't do it.

I disagree. It's not like I'm talking at full volume in a live game so that the dude at the other end of the table can hear what I'm saying about him, or even that I'm talking about him at all. For all he knows I'm talking to my friend about the San Francisco Giants being the most awesome baseball team on the planet.

If me and my friend knew Algonquian, would talking in the table chat be more acceptable? So the dude sees two people having a conversation, but has no idea what's going on in it. Is that really any different?

I've been at tables on Party where guys were talking to each other in French about me. Fortunately they were both donks so I stuck around, but if they were good I'd just leave the table. I want to know if guys are friends and talking to each other.
