I'm glad that scoring isn't important. If it were, baseball would be as lame as figure skaying.

[ QUOTE ]
Anyone know why in the Braves 1st game Villareal was credited with the win? [/ QUOTE ] When the starter doesn't pitch 5 innings, but the team maintains the lead for the entire game, the scorer is permitted to award the win to the pitcher he feels merits it. Since Hudson pitched 4 innings, this is what the OS did. |

When the starting pitcher leaves the game with the lead, but does not go 5 innings, and his team goes on to win without their opponent tying or going ahead at any time in the game, it is the scorer's discretion as to who gets the win. Reitsma got the save, and that basically leaves Villareal to get the win.

Your question has already been answered but I just want to add that when this happens it completely f*cks over pitchers, and is a ruleing that pitchers hate.
For example, let's say it's 1st and 3rd, 1 out. A pitcher's priority is obviously two things, a strikeout or GBDP. So the pitcher does a great job of manipulating the count to get a double play ball and the middle infielder get 1 out and botches the 2nd, a run scores. Next thing you know it, two broken bat singles and a homerun later the pitcher has given up 5 runs and his ERA has gone up when he should have been out of the inning to begin with. I hate this rule but I understand it. |

Just to clarify....if the starting pitcher doesn't go five innings, he can NEVER be credited with a win. The judgement part on the scorer as to who is most effective applies to cases between two or more relievers, where two or more relievers are used after a starter exits with < 5 innings and his team has already gained and maintains the lead throughout.
Except of course, in the event the game only goes 5 innings due to rainout, the SP can be given a win for pitching 4 innings. |

The team that is trailing in the game must have 5 complete innings of ab's for the game to be declared 'official'. Therefore, the SP must have had to have pitched 5 innings to earn the win, right? |
