Default Re: what can i do about my computer being out of disk space?

Apparently itunes videos take up a shitton of space...I think my laptop has a 30gig harddrive. Apparently I have 20 gigs worth of tv shows/movies...is there a way to make them smaller or something or do I just need to delete them? Also, apparently pokertracker is taking up 7 gigs...Thanks for all your help.

lol @ your 30 gig HD.

Yeah, you need to delete crap or buy an external/buy an internal/burn some TV shows on to DVD's.

Won't cost you more than $150 for about 250 GB worth of HD space or external, $100 for 120 GB for a new internal HD, or about $60 for a DVD burner and about 100 DVD (470 GB worth of space).

So I finally bought one of these extrenal hard drives but I have no cluye how to make it work. When I installed it and all, it brought up some crap about backing up files or something...anyways, I have no clue what any of this means. I figured id just plug it in and id have lots of extra space...apparently I was wrong. Any help wit this would be greatly appreciated. Fwiw, I got the Western Digital 250 gb external hd.

Actually you are wrong now and were right before. You do have lots of extra space. The stuff that came up when you installed the external HD was probably just asking if you wanted to link some backup software to it so backups could be done with one click or automatically.

If you go to MyComputer, you should see that drive listed along with your current HD and DVD drives. So just go to control panel and files and move your itunes directory from your main HD to the external. Same for anything else you want to move like movies. And when you just want to back up something that needs to stay on your main HD, just select its directory and then paste it to the external.

All of this assumes the external is properly setup, which should have been automatic. If you can see it when it is hooked up in MyComputer along with the other drives, then it is set up OK. Also keep in mind that you can't just disconnect a USB connected device which is on or in use, without first clicking on the icon in your systray for safely doing so.

Much better option: uninstall, then reinstall Pokertracker and PAHUD on your external drive. (Email ptrack pat and the PAHUD guy and tell them what you're doing first - they'll give you a new key to use to register, because both will ask for one.) You should also follow the directions on the PT website to make sure your databases aren't deleted when you uninstall everything.

Once you've done that, two things will happen: you won't ever need to worry about your laptop drive again (because PT will quickly fill up the other 23 gigs otherwise), and your PT use will be a lot faster because there's no doubt your laptop hard drive is slower than the external. You might even get your data compressed (you know, that thing that pops up every week in PT?) within a reasonable time.

Sorry for the other threat...I totally missed your help here. Thanks a lot. I greatly appreciate it.

One more quick question...when I travel, am I going to have to take the external hard drive with me in order to use itunes or pt?

Yeah, don't do this. The external HD will probably be faster, but the USB bus will completely destroy that speed increase. Definitely don't put files on an external HD that you're going to be actively reading and writing to and from.

So I put all the itunes stuff on the external drive...now my itunes is totally empty and it appears the only way to put everything back on it is to do each song and movie one at a time...is there a better way?
