[ QUOTE ]
i was playing in a B&M and hero bet the river and called the raise from villain. hero tabled a straight flush. shreveport, LA. hero bragged about his straight flush for hours after that too. telling every new player that sat down how he had gotten one that night. he was so proud. [/ QUOTE ] Hey man, I suck at making str8 flushes(or any kind of winning hand really). If I ever make a str8 flush I'm gonna brag about it like I won the lottery or something. |

only slightly annoying that someone would keep bragging about it and definitely not post-worthy.
but coupled w/ the fact that he left 1-2 bets on the river, he didn't seem to have much to brag about. he even excitedly announced his hand while flipping it over too so it wasnt from a misread. |

[/ QUOTE ] He was excited and wanted to show it down. If he reraised they might fold and he wouldn't get to showdown his straight flush. It probably never occured to him, he can always flip his hand over before he drags the pot. |

[ QUOTE ]
If he reraised they might fold and he wouldn't get to showdown his straight flush. [/ QUOTE ] Precisely. It probably wouldn't be time wasted to derive a whole model of hold 'em in which the aim is not to maximize cash EV, but to maximize the "psychological showdown value" of getting to be star of the table for a given hand. Showing down the winning hand, any winning hand, is of huge value in this model -- the bigger the hand the better. Of course winning without a showdown, while better than nothing, has less value than winning a smaller pot in a showdown. This may sound ridiculous, but it's probably not too far from how many B&M SS LHE players approach the game. Think about what the policy prescriptions of such a model would be: call often (because you might win), raise rarely if ever {because you might not get to show down a winner, although a value raise might be OK if you think you'll get called), bluff never. I would argue that's pretty close to how a naive bad player plays, and such a player may even be maximizing "expectation" in terms of that great feeling when you show down a winner (as opposed to cash expectation of course). Poker's such a great game because playing wrong carries such strong psychological reinforcement! |

I played a hand in the commerce 20/40 game where I raised a guys bet on the river, on a JJ229 board, with J9 and was called by quad 2s. The guy said he was worried about quad jacks.
I also think one bet went in on the turn and two on the flop. And it was limped around preflop as well. |

I saw a 20/40 hand at Borgata, set over set, (Qs and Ts) go 2 bets before the flop, 1 on the flop, 2 on the turn, and 1 on the river. Three ways.

There was a 3/6 limit hand where the board ended up 55x5x at the river. It was 4 ways after the flop and 3 ways at the start of the river. It went after the river card.. player 1 bet, player 2 fold, player 3 (me) raise, and the reraising ensue putting about 10 more BB into the pot with me going all-in. I proudly showed my AA while he threw down the 5 into the muck hand face up and kept the other card down. The dealer told him to pick up the 5 card and he took the pot. Man was I stupid.
Those were the early days of my career and wished I knew enough to call his hand dead just because he threw that card down. I rememeber the whole table being quiet while he reeled me in. Man was I ignorant. There hasn't been much imporvement since then. |
