And the Bike is not in a crappy area. But to get from LAX to the Bike, you'll have to go through some very crappy areas. So you're right... a rental car is probably best.

Cab or rental car. Rental car is probably cheaper. There is no other realistic option. Anyway, with a rental car you can also visit Commerce which is like a 10 minute drive from the Bike.

I lived within walking distance of the Metrolink station in Burbank, but was never able to map out a reasonable way to get anywhere near the Bike or Commerce by public transportation, so I drove, and it was hell.
