Hearst steals the election and crushes Star and Bullock.

Not sure that's actually the case, this was never really established during the episode. Bullock was losing to Manning in Sturgis, but the final outcome wasn't revealed.

Unlike most here, I thought it was a good ending. The way they left things, and Swearengen's last line went perfect together. In real life, things don't usually end neat and clean, and often, not everything gets resolved.

I thought about it a little more this morning, and I still hate the ending.

Agreed, it would be unrealistic if everything worked out perfectat the end, but SOME measure of closure would have been more satisfying. After all the build up all season about "war" and "blood", the final episode was remarkably uneventful, aside from the complete triumph of Hearst.

Essentially, it was like Lord of the Rings, except if Sauron had succeeded in taking over Middle Earth, Aragorn denied his right to be King, and Gandalf murdered to spare the lives of the hobbits and appease the displeasure of Sauron.

Or it was like Star Wars, if Darth Vader succeeded in conquering the Galaxy, Luke was left to die after his hand got cut off, and Han Solo and Leia were allowed to live, but only as prisoners on the second Death Star.

Feh... Very satisfying...

I've got almost 4000 posts now, and it seems like 10% of them start out with the same four words:

You guys are nuts!

This was a GREAT episode. Almost every scene, there was half a chance of someone we love getting killed. And not in a silly, Schwartzenegger way, but realistically.

I didn't want Charlie, Al, or Johnny to die in this episode, and all three put their necks on the line for us. What more do you want?

And I'm not so sure it was such a total win for Hearst. Al called on the Wu Brigade and the Hawkeye Brigade. As soon as they stepped foot into the arena, Hearst took off like a scared schoolgirl. I don't believe for a second that a copper find in Montana is more pressing than a gold strike in South Dakota, and I can't believe that Hearst thinks so.

I, for one, am tickled pink that the apocolypse was avoided in Deadwood. All our friends live to see another season, or movie, or whatever.

Latest results from Sturgis: Cy's a freaking lunatic! "Lord, help me understand c**t."

I agree with YTF. This was an awesome episode. Lots of tension, some killin, threats of killin, and Richardson talking Jive to Aunt Lou! WTF more do you people want?

Feh. What a letdown, especially as the series finale. Not glimmer of hope...

[/ QUOTE ]

You know that when they taped this episode they did not know they were going to get cancelled. Thank god they are going to make 2 more episodes to finish things off properly.

I'd have liked some measure of revenge by Al... Hearst did, in fact, coldly cut off his finger...

Instead, he has to humiliate himself further to Hearst, before watching him ride out of town, richer and stronger than when he arrived...

I thought it was v good. It's not fair to judge it as a series finale. No closure does kinda suck. Hopefully we'll get the movies or another season after we finish season 1 of the surf show.

FYI the real life Al Swearingen gets hit by a train in Denver.
