I think the villain had an Ace and was trying to push you out. I think the mistake here is playing weak on the flop. Not sure I could have layed this down.

Did he show?

His range is really wide.

1) He limped
2) He plays 36% of his hands
3) He bet the flop (not typical of someone holding a A9 or 66)
4) you make a very confusing lead on the turn and look weak 5) there are 2 draws on the board,
6) other nines you beat may play this strong

1+2+3+4+5+6 = easy push.
