Too bad he's dead and the band broke up - but believe it or not Pete DeFreitas from Echo and the Bunnymen was amazing - perhaps one of the best drummers from the alt rock genre.

check that - the band is still around but.........

I think it's fairly easy to argue that any answer other than Niel Peart is incorrect.

And if you think Neal Peart is incorrect, and you say anyone other than John Bonham, you will have a difficult case to make.

Had the OP not specified rock drummers, I believe the correct answer would be Gene Krupa, seen here in a drum-off vs. Hamilton & Hamilton.
