If he "hooked you up", then yes.
If just standard hook up, no.

Ya good point. When I ordered cable internet at my parents house, I lived in the basement, there were windows out to my backyard in my room, they were open. All of a sudden I hear this guy gagging and throwing up outside my window. WTF, i looked out and there is this small asian guy who spoke very broken english gagging and yelling something. I went out to see what the hubub was, there was a stinky dead cat near the cable box, and he freaked. I didnt tip him though, I just put the cat in the trash and gave him one of my dads beers.

My theory on heavy tipping though:
I never tip the pizza guy more than 1 or 2 bucks, saame for the valet, etc. The only people that I do tip extremely extremely well is the type of service people where you know they are taking some thought/pride in their job, mainly bartenders and waiters. The hippy shlub pizza delivery guy who clogs my street double parked doesnt deserve it.

So do you tip the garbage man when he picks up your trash twice a week? Or the guy who mows the lawn?

[/ QUOTE ]

My wife gives the gardeners soda or homemade cookies from time to time.

Alot of people give the garbage men and lawn person a christmas gift(cash) at the end of the year...

Cable guy = No tip. His company is sucking out over $1000 per household every year. That's enough to for them to pay him a very nice salary. He is not working for min wage liek a pizza guy or a bartender.

[/ QUOTE ]

...but I agree that the cable guy should not be tipped. I would be for not tipping the garbage men either because like the cable guy they are most likely union and make good money, where as the lawn guys are usually working for minimum wage.

I tried to tip mine when he came out to my apartment. I didn't know if you were supposed to or not... I just moved out and was on my own. He wouldn't accept it. I gave him a can of soda though, so just have one of those ready.

Well honestly there isn't one within 90 miles of where I live, so I would say there are plenty of people who don't know what Chipotle is...first time I heard of it was on Mad Money...

Do I tip him for setting up my service? my roomate says its -EV

[/ QUOTE ]

Only if he'll set you up with the premium channels...

BUT many years ago, I had my girlfriend stay at my place for the day so the cable guy could come in and set up my cable box.

I signed up for basic cable but ended up having access to EVERY premium channel available. She claims she didn't provide any 'extras' to get these channels, but to this day I still wonder (she was a hottie though).

The premium channels were sweet. Having a hot girl let the cable guy in is definitely +EV

I always wondered... is it just a switch or something? If so, why can't we just go outside and flip it. Wouldn't the actual cable company operators or whoever is billing know that we aren't being charged the correct price?

I can see this kind of stuff happening when cable was new... but now with technology and every company striving to be efficient, I just don't see how stuff like this is still possible.
