Well from what I've learned you'll always be dealing with sound problems then especially working with mics. However the Digi001 should do what you need...I don't think much out there will "help you" write songs and stuff...good luck.

lol I didn't mean "help" me in that way, I meant if I have an idea it's hard to just write down a vocal lick on sheet paper...it is easier to record and save bits and pieces

nah. he can get a decent AKG condenser with a popfilter and so long as no tv's/fans are on he'll get a good sound and just have to mix down the levels properly, or just bounce it to a vocal wav and bring it into the studio to tweak it more.you can have a GREAT mic and [censored] mixing skills and have a far worse sound than if you mix REALLY well and have an alright mic.

also, my buddy who studied music technology in university just bought a presonus firebox and he says its great. Quote:

i bought the presonus firebox, because i wanted to option of recording more than two channels at once. if you will only ever be doing two channels (1 mic+ mono piano or guitar) than the mbox would be excellent. it has really high quality preamps and it has protools which is industry standard.

but, the one i got is cheaper, has more channels, comes with cubase which is basically just as good as protools, etc
