Is using internet poker at a wireless place ( hotel, starbucks) safe?

No, this is completely wrong. The wireless connection is happening at the physical layer, the HTTPS encryption is happening further up the stack, before any data is sent over the wireless connection. In the case of HTTPS/SSL an insecure wireless connection will result only in your encrypted transmission being intercepted.
