It's always been my understanding that The Scale does not refer to the average "woman" but rather the average "girl". That is to say, it only includes sexually mature females under 35ish, and unusually attractive middle aged women.

If we included every sexually mature woman in the world in our rankings and 5 was average, then the average college co-ed would be an 8 or 9 by default!

that's another big issue with these polls. people get worked up because they think someone is a 2 (meaning 80% are better looking) while others think she's a 4 (using the normal distribution, meaning 1 sd below average) and really they mean about the same thing.
