In my office hours today I had a girl come see me for help on the homework. I was just back from lunch where I'd watched about the VT shooting on the TV, and asked her if she'd heard about it. She had, and after we talked about how crazy it was, she said to me, without any prompting, "They really should allow professors to carry guns." DUH.

[/ QUOTE ]
Hah! Allow them. That's a very cute concept -- I like that.

*I* have training to do so in a safe manner, and I happen to be a good deal more efficient with their use than your typical cop on the beat. So I guess this means we're good.

Is efficient synonymous with trigger-happy?

[/ QUOTE ]
No, but I'm sure Metric and the other millions of gun owners appreciate you sliming them. Gun owners could just as easily call anyone that doesn't own a gun a pansy.

There is an argument for having people carry guns. They are called cops. They carry guns because they have training to do so in a safe manner.

Anyone who wants to understand why citizens of america have the right to carry guns see Borodogs post.

So a [ QUOTE ]

not so every Tom, Dick, and Harry can carry a pistol for fun

[/ QUOTE ]

I can't speak from experience, so I don't know what it's like having to defend yourself from the onslaught of a violent criminal who is threatening your life. But I doubt it's "fun".

You realize that the militia fought the government right? That's not 'fun' that is serious business and should not be taken lightly at all.

The founding fathers were very adament about every Tom, Dick, and Harry being able to own a gun. Say what you want about the second amendment, they wanted any free man to able to own a gun.

I'm guessing you didn't read the thread where Andyfox basically destroyed the idea that the Founding Fathers wanted every man to own a gun? I'll see if I can dig up the link.

Where did I take it lightly? My post had anti-gun ownership undertones; never did I insinuate guns were a light matter. I grew up around many guns and take them very seriously. But I don't believe in the absolute ownership of guns by all people. I agree that guns are necessary to protect oneself from tyranny, but that goes back to the well regulated militia argument, not to every person owning a gun.

By "more efficient," I refer to the ability to put rounds on target more quickly, at longer range, and with fewer misses. I hope that's all right with you.

So you skip over where he says he's trained to use them safely and then imply he wants to kill casually kill people (sure you did disguise it by 'asking a question' but I hope your not so low as to play innocent and deny any implication)

I'm venturing a guess that you have never been the victim of violent crime (as in robbed at knife point). I hope none of your family ever gets raped or murdered. Would you want one of these 'trigger happy' (read: trained to safely and effectively use firearms) folk around if someone was abducting your sister in a parking lot? I sure would.
