My guess is, given the shortcomings of the Tubby Era, they will try to bring in:

1) A guy with Kentucky ties.
2) A guy who plays an up-tempo, entertaining style.

And please - waste no time weeping for the UK program. I live right across the street from central campus and people are celebrating like we just won WW II again. Stick to your [censored] basketball program where 20 wins is a tremendous season. Carry on.

[/ QUOTE ]

Tubby averaged 26.3 wins per season, went to 4 Elite Eights and won a title in 10 years at UK.

If the new guy comes in and does exactly that, wouldn't you be happy?

[/ QUOTE ]

Here we go again with the stats. Hey, he's a 3-time Coach of the Year, too.

It comes down to this: In ten years, Tubby had 3 good teams - meaning, 3 teams that could have potentially won the title. (Maybe four if you count the 2004 team which was decent and which Tubby coached right out of the tournament.) The '98 team had Pitino's players, who had played in back-to-back title games, and they did things their way.

I give Tubby all the credit in the world for the success of the 2002 and 2003 teams. But 2/9 doesn't cut it at UK.

Note: Tubby Smith has never been to a Final Four with players he recruited. Ever.

He will be great for Minnesota. I hope they revel in their NCAA tourney appearances. Congratulations.

[/ QUOTE ]

Whoa there Mr. Oversensitive. I was asking if you'd be happy if the new guy duplicated Smith's record, or if you expect more. What do you expect from the new coach?

[/ QUOTE ]

UK fans are simply arrogant fools. They want to win it all every year. Anyone with a brain knows that given the current climate/parity in college hoops, that is just not realistic. Unless you are Duke. (I am no Duke fan, by the way, but I don't pretend that what they do there is anything short of phenomenal. And UK does have an advantage over Duke and most other shcools, as one does not need to be literate to be admitted so long as they can hoop.) I love it when pompous schools do things like this. I hope UK [censored] the bed for years.

Tubby was on ESPN radio this morning. Here is a summary of the 6 to 7 minute interview:

He is happy with the legacy he left but at this time in his life he needed a new challenge and MN was just that. They asked if he would have been the coach of UK next season had he decided not to leave and he said yes that that wasn't even an issue. He says UK has great fans and a great legacy and that counting the two years his son Saul was there before he got there Lexington has been the center of his life for 12 years. He leaves great friends behind in his journey to MN. At his age, he said, you begin to think about what makes me happy and what will keep my passion alive (he mentioned his passion was getting the most from young ppl) and he said to answer that question a change was needed. He said the pressure to win championships won't change, that the media and scrutiny in MN is comparable to Lexington, and that winning basketball is the only brand he is interested in. He is interested in ice fishing this winter and is a big fisherman and can't wait to take advantage of the many natural delights of his new home state (I used to live in MN so I can speak to this). Class act. Congrats MN Golden Golphers on your new coach.

Yeah but he's black.

How is Calipari not a slam dunk? Scummy guy with the school impervious to sanctions.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's exactly why he's not a slam dunk.

Also, a guy that virtually no one has mentioned that I think is at least in the discussion is Bob Huggins.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes. Huggins does very well with players who cannot read. He and UK would be perfect for each other.

On espn radio this morning, they also played a clip of comments made previously by Rick Pitino regarding Tubby. Pitino said that if UK got rid of Tubby, that it would set the program back at least 10 years.

Are you implying action on UK's part here, or is this still part of your rant against the fans?

Both, but I think the fans are much more to blame. They are delusional.

yeah....don't know how Purdue is behind Minnesota or Iowa

Indiana area has that much talent

[/ QUOTE ]

Purdue should be considered higher and I would think Iowa is a pretty decent gig too.
But boy does it seem like Purdue has taken some significant steps backwards the past few years. They used to actually be a pretty good team. Now they're 100% forgettable.

I don't even really care to dispute this, other than to say that if you don't need to be literate to get into UK, you don't need to be verbal to get into Louisville.

Only if Tubby had stayed.

In the SEC this year, it was almost like the other SEC coaches were taking up a collection for Tubby. Almost like when Rob Johnson was the Buffalo Bills QB and opposing D-lineman "let him down easy" when they sacked him.

Tennessee holds out Lofton against UK. LSU holds out Glen Davis. UGA giving Levi Stukes a truly phantom suspension for just the UK game in a must-win game on Senior Day. Alabama being careful with Steele in the SEC Tournament.

Of course that's a wildly unplausible conspiracy theory, but my point is, everyone in the SEC (and nationally) who is actually in the know about Tubby is shaking in their boots now that he's gone. He'd lost 4 straight to Vandy and 6 straight to Florida. He wasn't exactly striking fear into the heart of Billy Donovan.

Seriously - Tubby was the highest paid coach in the land, and at one time was the highest paid coach college or pro. He lost four straight to Vandy. Vandy has no athletic department.

I expect the highest paid coach in the country, coaching at an extremely prestigious program with all sorts of built-in advanges, to be able to beat Vanderbilt 1 out of 4 times.

But I guess I'm just an unreasonable, delusional UK fan!

Hope all you want - UK is only headed up. I will even venture so far as to say that (assuming Barnhart doesn't TOTALLY botch it up) there is no one who could reasonably be the next UK coach who would be a downgrade from Tubby Smith. No one. And that says more about the caliber of coach the Kentucky job demands than it does about Tubby Smith.

(If Rick Barnes gets the job I reserve the right to retract this statement.)
