love jarmusch, but permanent vacation is not good. it's jim's first film, so he's just trying it all out here. there is a hint of the genius that will follow, but sitting through this film is a rather painful experience |

300 - Decent movie but mostly a popcorn flick - Great cinematography and the slow motion for most of the battle scenes actually didn't bother me as much as I expected they would.
Breach - A bit slow, but still woth seeing. I wish they dealt a little more with his relationship with the KGB but for a "non action" film - quite good. |

pryor, rewatched stranger than fiction last night. upon finishing it the first time, felt like i needed to see it again and reeavaluate the ending. i'm at peace with it now. made the mistake that most people make with kaufman's endings--neglecting to see how self-aware they are. stf knows exactly what it is doing and this is what saves it. |

[/ QUOTE ] No shortbus yet, but I actually sat through dumbland today. This is something to be endured. It has it's moments, but really it was quite unenjoyable. Which I think was maybe the point he was getting at. It literally turned my stomach watching this and I couldn't finish eating the apple crisp my wife and I worked so hard peeling apples to make. Which I guess proves again how good Lynch is at manipulating me, because I'm not really sure why I was so repulsed. He wins. |

![]() The Prestige I finally got to see this. From the first day I read that this movie was getting made to the first trailer I've been dying to see this. In fact it's been a running gag between the wife and me that whenever I saw the poster at the theater I'd have to say "that one looks interesting..." and she'd always respond "really? never heard of it." Anyway, I thought it was a good movie, well acted, directed, written, etc. Not great, and it was hard to avoid spoilers so I had a good inkling of most the big "twists", but I didn't feel it was as reliant on a big surprise twist like an M. Night movie or similar. It was still quite enjoyable and highly recommended to any fans of Bale, Nolan, or well done enjoyable cinema out there that haven't already seen it. |

yeah, um, lynch shouldn't play with video cameras. stick with film stock, please. [/ QUOTE ] I agree. Although I'm intrigued as to the larger story being told in this woodenly acted short. But I need to thank you for pointing me to this, because you helped solve a decades old mystery for me. Years ago I caught part of Wild at Heart on cable and there was a throw away mention of Fairfield, Iowa in there. Fairfield, IA is a farming town in the middle of nowhere with about 10k people in southeast Iowa that just so happens to be where I grew up. WTF is up with us getting a random shout out by Nick Cage? Well, Fairfield is also home to the Maharishi School of Management which describing could fill up a forum all to itself. Airplane overview is that they're big on eastern philosophy, consciousness, meditation, and organic living. It makes for an interesting mix in such a small town. Anyway, the youtube "related clips" at the bottom right of Darkened Room pointed me to a promo tape of David Lynch speaking last year at the Maharishi School of Management. After 5 minutes of investigation, it turns out he's a meditator, on the board of trustees of the school, and has been for many years if he was giving shout outs in the early 90s. And if I was going back to Iowa for Memorial Day, I could even check him out at this year's Q&A. http://lynchweekend.org/ This stuff is possibly common knowledge for those that go to the University, but it was news to me. So the mystery of the random Wild at Heart shout out has been solved, all thanks to you rothko and the mini David Lynch club he started in this thread. I'm going to have to go back and rewatch every movie in a whole new light, now. |
