No.

Sixth form.

But, yeah, 16 years old is the end of compulsory education.

My word, perl is sexy.

Jay & Shandy,

It doesn't really matter what you do. You're [censored] brits - you're gonna score no matter what while in the US. It's a bit like being in a 2 on 2 eating contest and having kobayashi as your teamate. it's just not fair.

sorry for reaching with the metaphor, I just really wanted to include that youtube clip

exactly. the difference is simply that england does not use the term "high school" to mean secondary education.

when an american wants to know when you finish "high school" they want to know when you finish secondary education (not compulsory education), they want to know when you've finished what you need to finish in order to start university.

thus finishing high school = finishing A levels or 6th form.

most people who like to consider gymnasium in german speaking countries, et al, along with a levels/6th form in england NOT to be high school only do this because they believe that gymnasium/a levels/6th form are somehow a level above american high schools. this is wrong, and is what I suspected kolo was saying.

side note: in some parts of the US the end of compulsory education is also 16. It used to be the case almost everywhere, and is now the case in prob less than half the country. though the main difference is it is preferable to have a high school degree or equiv (GED) for the most basic of jobs.

I agree with you, bpc.

However, as someone who has experienced both US HS & A-levels, A-levels are eminently superior. Even to AP courses. The ones that I did were harder than GCSEs certainly but not near as hard as A-levels.

The HS I ended up at thought I was retarded since I was only doing 5 A-levels (1 was AS)...</anecdote>

But, AFAIK, the UK is behind some western European countries and probably Japan at this level. In higher education, though, Oxbridge uber alles.
