sk any good golfer on this thread...it's not possible to shoot 36 in this format. [/ QUOTE ] Total crap. I played this format one time. I watched the only kid in my group shoot 35. He was an above average college golfer but nothing amazing. The course was very hard too. You put tiger on a municipal golf course thats like 6500 yards and he shoots like 66 or better taking the worst of two balls. I shot 48 and played terribly and I was probably 17. |

[ QUOTE ] I have been on the receiving end of two classic hustles: 1.) Pro-Poker Player named Jeff Friedman accepted a $2,000 bet that he could not break 80 in a "reverse-scramble" at MountainGate CC in LA....We "set-him-up" by have greenskeeper set the pins in really tough spots...Jeff shot 43 on the front (w/an OB)...then tried to buy-out for $1,200; we declined...He shot a 36 on the back...For those that don't know, a reverse-scramble means that the player has to hit two balls on every shot & take the "worst" one. Brutal format [/ QUOTE ] I think this is an urban legend or something. If you are talking reverse scramble (one player playing two-ball/worst ball), even Tiger Woods is not shooting 36. Period. A scratch golfer would be lucky to shoot 45, 46 or 47 in such a format. Unless you played this format you don't really know how brutal and penal this format really is. We did this in one of our men's night games and of about 20 golfers who shoot between 36 and 40 for 9 holes, the best score was 53!!!! Ask any good golfer on this thread...it's not possible to shoot 36 in this format. [/ QUOTE ] ive played 2 man reverse scramble and we did shoot horrible but im sure tiger woods could break par all day on your avg. 72rating/130 slope course |

Question: If I wanted to play Tiger Woods an 18 hole round of golf for cash, what kind of deal would I have to get him to agree to for me to have a decent chance of collecting the amount we bet? [/ QUOTE ] I think you'd have to negotiate for three "gotchas". (sometimes called something different in other areas of the country) |

Ask any good golfer on this thread...it's not possible to shoot 36 in this format. [/ QUOTE ] You are mistaken. I played to a 1 in my mid-20s and playing a reverse scramble was not that big of a deal for someone who hit the ball straight and had a good short game (as I did then and the OP does). Tiger Woods playing like he did at the British Open would break 70 consistently on most courses. The OP's main point is that the short game is king (with straight drives second). If you have a good short game, your game will be consistent since your poor iron days will be less damaging. Not to mention it demoralizes good players. I could get up and down from a trash can ten years ago, but my swing appeared very poor. I won quite a few bets that way. And just to clarify the point of the thread. The OP isn't really hustling, from the descriptions he is giving. He is just making good bets. I haven't seen him say he has falsely represented his game at any point. |

If a solid mini-tour player came to you and said, "let's play for $$$" what would be your play? (assume he's a +3 and has a healthy backer)
what kind of bets would you want? |

Ask any good golfer on this thread...I don't know what I'm talking about [/ QUOTE ] fyp [/ QUOTE ] That's at the very least a little harsh. The big difference between a tour pro and a scratch golfer is a repeatable swing. I can't believe you believe that a scratch golfer can play a 7200 yard course and have maybe more than 1-2 birdies - and those would most likely be on the par 5s. The balance of a course (typically 10/18 holes) are par 4s, and putting their average distance at 430, it would require two good drives, certainly two good approaches, and two good putts to make a birdie. Par 3s? Yeah, good luck getting a birdie on those. That leaves par 5s to compensate for the wreckage on the others. Also, there is a gigantic difference between a 3-4 HDCP and being a 1 or scratch. Having been both I can speak from experience. For a 3-4 HDCP I'd predict about a +10 (+3 on par 3s, +6 on par 4s, +1 on par 5s). |
