You guys trash Euros but they have it right. Price it in.

there is no way Euros have it right in this case. tipping leads to better service and allows good people to make more money.

I took a cab ride for like a mile last week, fare came to £2.60, I only had £3 in change anyway and handed it to the guy, he starts digging around to give me my 40p change. Obv I say no keep that and thats the way it should be.

Give me back ALL my change, I'll decide whether or not you EARNED your tip.

Cabbies need to accept the variance of their profession. Sometimes you'll get no tip, sometimes a massive tip, don't complain when you get a small tip or you'll get nothing at all. Cabbies need to understand the arrangement of their profession.

Yeah, especially when you tip everyone, even if they insult you like the italian guys mentioned a couple posts above.

everyone's point is that tipping is a good way to elude taxes for all involved, and in the end keeps prices of meals/cab rides/etc. down, and the level of service up. it's not perfect, but tipping >> not tipping.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, presumably this is another difference between Europeans and Americans. We'd:

a.) rather people were assured of a living wage without leaving it to people's discretion.
b.) rather people actually *paid* their taxes, so that we have a safety net for the times when we get some chronic illness, or are laid off from work.

I mean it might just be me, but I think it's much nittier to refuse to support a national health service through income tax than it is to think that a gratuity should be discretionary.

Also: still no word on how much one should tip a lap dancer?

i generally tip what ever is between the cost and the next round bill number.

i.e., $12.25 = $15.00

i.e., $14.75 = $20.00

i.e., $26.00 = $30.00

Can i hijack with another tipping phenomenon? I have talked to my dad about this a few times. I have always tipped really well for really good service, mostly because I like really good service. But i find that if i ever go somewhere high end, I generally get horrible service because they think I wont tip well since I am young and dont dress really nice or somesuch when i am not working. When I get service like this, I tip poorly. I feel like there is some neverending cycle being perpetuated here. Someone assumes I will tip bad, serves me as such, and I tip them bad. I would really like the opportunity to tip them well, but it makes no sense if i am ignored for the entire meal. I am sure other people are in the same boat. what do you do here?

With the way taxis are already overpriced + the way some of you tip, why not just rent a car? 2 or 3 taxi trips pays for a rental car. And no worrying about awkward moments between you and your driver.

Everyone tips the cocktail waitresses $5 per drink, though, right?

[/ QUOTE ]
