This is really an argument less about the type of movie and more about the directing.

Some here have argued that it doesn't matter who directed Transformers...its just a dumb movie about robots who fight so who [censored] cares as long as it looks cool. That is the problem I have...even a dumb movie about robots can be [censored] unreal if the director does a great job. Michael Bay is not that type of director...but as long as people are fine with just getting special effects n [censored] blowing up...there will be fewer and fewer "great" summer movies that go beyond just being special effects cuz studios have learned that they don't need to bother...people will settle for less. hence FF4, Silver Silver, Xmen3, etc etc

Yup, true, and as an example, I'll bring up a movie I've already brought up in this thread: Robocop.

I think almost nobody expected much of this flick, and it blew everybody away. It was honestly touching, the action scenes were put together incredibly well, the villains were not completely cardboard but had interesting, distinct personalities, and it was funny as hell and often viciously funny.

All that from a friggin robot movie? What the ...?

When you've got moviemakers who really give a damn and have some talent, an ordinary thrill movie can take a huge, huge leap up from being some goofy forgettable fun to blowing away everyone from wide-eyed schoolkids to grizzled sneery snobs. And you can not something fairly watchable once, but watchable again and again even by people who aren't fans of that type of movie. (And those repeat viewings drive ticket sales, DVD purchases, DVD rentals, and cable buys too.)

There's plenty of reason to do the best job you can.

Came into it w/ 0 knowledge sept for Animal Transformers TV show + Action figures.

I give it an A-

Only thing that really bothered me is
A) obviously unrealistic by default, but even then they had some unrealistic on top of unrealistic parts.
B) super cheasy robot lines

I liked all the one-line comedy in it, thought it was done well although it apparently was annoying to some of you.

Finally got to see it last night at the late showing.

I was extremely impressed. I loved this. Exactly what I was hoping for, and more.

Things I thought were great:
i) obv the transforming... this is an insane bench of CGI reached, even if there's been as good stuff as this, this stuff is still some of the best I've ever seen
ii) the humour... lots of good laughs which I enjoyed
iii) the transformers!... their characters were perfect. I'm no comic book/cartoon junkie but I think they were done perfectly, each with their own personality
iv) Bumblebee... quite possibly the best character in that movie, in my opinion. From everything to the car to the talking with his radio signals... loved it
v) The action sequences... OMG the slo-mo sequence of Ironhide and co. in the city...amazing

Things I didn't like:
i) I honestly thought there was a bit too much talking by the transformers. Less talking would have added to their impressiveness and make them more omniscient
ii) Too much humour... while I liked all the humour, there was probably a bit too much, I think.
iii) Length... they could easily have shortened some scenes, such as the autobots in the garden scene at the Witwicky residence. The movie could have been clipped down to 2 hours even with some good editting and I think it would have improved the overall effect.

However... on the whole... this was an amazing movie, and it definetly lived up to and exceeded the expectations I set for it coming in. I can only hope they punch a ticket for a sequel or two.

There's nothing I could add to this thread that hasn't been stated several times before. I enjoyed another bad Michael Bay movie.

But, anyone know anything about that one preview, you know, that Untitled J.J. Abrams Project?

I heard somewhere that it's supposed to be called "Bad Robot". But when I saw it, it sure looked Godzillaish to me.

I'm pretty certain Bad Robot is just the production company owned by J.J. Abrams. For instance, at the end of an episode of Lost, you see that red robot head sticking up out of the corner and children's voices say "Bad Robot!" He produces that and a few other shows.

Its called "Cloverfield" for now...which is just a made up title.
Its supposedly a monster from the sea movie, but not godzilla.
Its going to be all in like the first person...hand held cameras n stuff ala Blair Witch(ughhh) supposedly.

I just lost all interest in this movie. The trailer cut like that was pretty cool, but i wouldn't be able to sit through 90 minutes of it.
