The whole Gabe/Daniel swap couldn't have been any more lame.. HSP3 is not living up to 1/2 so far- hopefully things will improve as the better players get introduced in future episodes.. [/ QUOTE ] It looked completly set-up, but Doyle seemed sincerely surprised when Gabe asked him for money (maybe Doyle's just a good actor). I predict Gabe makes one more bluff (big one) and then goes back to the booth. It's not a spoiler, I just have a feeling. |

[/ QUOTE ] When Daniel left, he asked Gabe (paraphrasing) "You have what $110k?" Gape replied yes, 110k. Then he sits, and starts asking people for money. Doyle then says that he's gonna give Gabe all his 5k chips...which just happens to total $110k. You be the judge. |

Here's what actually went down- DN: "How much are you buying in for?" GK: "How much am I buying in for?" DN walks away into booth. GK asks DB for a million dollars. DB gives him the 5k chips. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qT3Vxi0-aA 4:15 into it. |

Why didn't they just say Gabe is going to play for a couple of episodes and Daniel's going to commentate? Too simple for TV? Anyway, other than that, I loved the show and can't wait till tomorrow. |

I wasn't saying that it was or wasn't staged. I was pointing out that the reason listed (both of them actually mentioning 110k before Gabe gets the loan) was faulty.

Anybody know when Ivey is making his debut this season?

It was my favorite episode out of all 3 seasons. Mainly because Kaplan just cracks me up on a regular basis.
The bit with Kaplan sitting down was clearly staged but that's fine. I read on 2+2 months ago that he was playing this season and I was really looking forward to it. And it was my impression (perhaps mistaken) that Kaplan plays these stakes with some regularity. Is that not the case? PS I also found the bit with Doyle's hesitation to loan MM and/or Gold money to be really interesting. I also am really enjoying watching Gold in general as the difference in his demeanor from the WSOP is fascinating. (Predictable, of course. But fascinating nonetheless). |

Yeah, he hesitated lending MM/Gold, but slid $110K right over to Kaplan.
I mean, in a staged sort of way, but still... |

I think we'll look back on this as the episode where HSP jumped the shark. [/ QUOTE ] You might be right that it could be a troubling direction for the show to take, but I don't think we can talk about jumping the shark just yet. It's a tough line to straddle between integrity and entertainment. Even most of the people on this forum- presumably a high concentration of poker purists- seem to judge players more by their personality than their poker skills, are generally more interested in all the side theatrics than the actual play, and complain an episode is boring when there are no major hands or confrontations. [ QUOTE ] What is HSP, a "reality" TV show now? If so, they need better scripts. Run them by me in the future. [/ QUOTE ] So how is the show supposed to generate more drama? They can either stack the deck to set up more Hansen/Negreanu quads vs. FH hands, or they can manufacture some situations like the Kaplan/Danny swap. Yes it was hoaky but it did inject some energy into the table dynamics which seemed kind of stale. [ QUOTE ] Or maybe they'd consider just hosting a real game and filming it? Radical idea I know. [/ QUOTE ] Well if you want to experience entire orbits of near silence at the table, six consecutive hands of blind-stealing, the dealer washing the cards for 30 seconds while Matusow puts ketchup on his onion rings, there is Live at the Bike. |
