Here's a website with all sorts of details, updates, etc.

It seems that there is still no definitive answer, but people are getting close.

for the really curious that link has lots of good stuff, and apparently the professor is going to reveal the answer AFTER HE READS 4000+ GUESSES that were made on the site or something

I think the whole thing is a scam. The guy running the site is more concerned with increased traffic than he is with the painting.

yeah, he's all like "i've increased my traffic 30x, here's a graph blah blah blah." also i don't really see how the "answer" that is up right now indicates anything about mental illness whatsoever, a perfectly sane person could have painted that picture

it doesn't. also, the thing in the lower left hand corner is more likely bushes than running water. it corresponds to bushes in the original painting.

If this is the answer, it ranks way at the top amongs the worst answers ever, and I would give that professor a star. This seems like just a random metaphor and has little or nothing to do with the various clues the prof gave, nor does it suggest either a phobia or insanity. Certainly it would render this whole thing as an exercise completely asinine.

Besides, what is the one thing wrong? I'm getting pretty pissed at this thread right now, which was about 10x as interesting as this exercise and this professor's "insight," unless it gets beefed up a hell of a lot by his direct answer later.

CLIFFS NOTES

"Secret" inside painting is just a hoax to drive traffic to a website that provides commentary/small bits of the "answer".
