[ QUOTE ]
In your opinion, the UFC champion has more skills than someone who is the world's greatest in all martial arts disciplines? That seems absurd to me. [/ QUOTE ]I'm assuming that the UFC champion is champion in all the fighting styles of UFC. I think that would be a fair assumption, the way the OP outlined the question. Mickey Brausch |

Mickey,
My Tae Kwon Do teacher in college used to teach hand-to-hand combat to Korean and US army guys. He did special training sessions with Special Forces guys. He'd spar with the top guys and they could barely touch him, much less beat him. I don't see how given that sort of skill disparity the SEAL is going to have a chance to apply these magic death blows. http://www.kimsookarate.com/awards/awards.html |

Mickey,
No. What is it? Jack Bauer is not, to my knowledge, a SEAL. |

MB,
Obviously if David applied himself to training for such a fight his superior intellect would allow him to outsmart and defeat any of these individuals, but I don't think he's a SEAL either. |

[ QUOTE ]
I think the worst would be the Navy SEAL. These guys are trained to kill with weapons, but in hand to hand combat they would get schooled by any of the experts. [/ QUOTE ] So when the OP states about the SEAL that he is the "World's most elite Navy Seal as far as hand to hand combat is concerned", that means nothing ? |

So when the OP states about the SEAL that he is the "World's most elite Navy Seal as far as hand to hand combat is concerned", that means nothing ? [/ QUOTE ] It means that particular SEAL is the best of the SEALs at hand to hand combat. He's the big fish in a small pond, when he jumps in the ocean with men who have dedicated their entire lives to hand to hand combat he becomes the guppy. Did you watch any of the videos in this thread? These guys are rarely landing a square punch, I don't see how a SEAL is going to manage to get an eye gouge or fish hook in the mix before getting taken down or clocked. I agree with you that this is about set and subsets of skills. 1) MMA world champ- world class boxer, world class Muay Thai(usually), world class Jiu Jitsu, and world class grappling 2) Worlds greatest martial artist- Will likely be well versed in several styles of martial arts but falls short when the fight moves to the ground 3) Best fighting SEAL- limited MMA training allows him to surpass the boxer and the streetfighter but stands little chance against #1 and #2 4) World champion boxer- Unparalleled boxing ability 5) Streetfighter- Stands no chance really The streetfighter stands no chance in my mind because streetfighting is highly derivative from boxing and differs mostly in that it involves the use of the environment around and weapons. |
