this year's top 10 payrolls are
Yankees $195MM Red Sox $143MM Mets $117MM White Sox $109MM Angels $109MM Dodgers $108MM Mariners $106MM Cubs $99MM Tigers $95MM Orioles $95MM the Red Sox spending is up this year because they have a couple of high priced veterans and are going for it now (TM), they will probably be back to their norm of 110-120 within the next year or two. unless they sign slappy of course. any of the major market teams could probably afford to have a year or two like the sox are having now if they were making some deep runs in the playoffs and combined it with some savvy marketing, etc. i'm not an expert on this though |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] i think it was year before last they admitted to losing money. [/ QUOTE ] you need to be careful with any "claims" they make. they are under no obligation to report true earnings, and their definitions may be very creative (ie not including TV money) [/ QUOTE ] yeah, that's what I figured when I read that news a while back. I didn't trust it very much. [/ QUOTE ] If they were still making a profit why have they made a concerted effort not to spend money since then? [/ QUOTE ] yeah, well, at this point I'll concede that these arguments can remain useful only up to a point. we can estimate each teams market size, as Nate did. we can fudge the #'s to take into account "baseball craziness" and things like that. but unless one of us has access to each teams books, none of us really know much money, if at all, each team is making. maybe Steinbrenner has been losing money, maybe he hasn't, maybe he reached an acceptable balance between profit and the team on the field, who knows. we do that he has run his business well in the nations largest market, and kudos to him for that. |

Seriously, because they realize young guys (i.e. not signing free agents and giving up draft picks // not trading prospects for win now guys) are the key to another dynasty. And dynasties make mad monies. |

If they were still making a profit why have they made a concerted effort not to spend money since then? [/ QUOTE ] Because it doesn't mean there isn't room for a greater profit? You're smarter than this. |

Well making the playoffs leads to much greater profit.

All I'm saying is if they could easily turn a profit with a 300 mill payroll they would/should have signed Beltran/Dice K etc.

I don't see how Greg Gagne is going to help. Kent Hrbek maybe.

Greg Gagne, Somerset, MA's pride and joy. He lives a couple miles from my parents' house and was always at the soccer fields where I played watching his kids. He's got a pretty rad baseball glove statue at the head of his driveway.
