Avoidance?
Personally, I am wasting time on forums at 12:45am right now because I know that if I go to bed, I am welcoming and speeding up the start of the new day - I'm a deep sleeper and when I hit the bed more or less all of a sudden its already time to wake up without consciously feeling much of a time lapse. Anyway, a new day means I get to spend 8+ hours worth of it as a slave to the system for a corporation so I can earn a paycheck which will allow me to pay the bills, perpetuating the unsatisfying cycle that is existence. Good times. |

If I go to sleep, I'll just have to get up and go to work. =( Actually, I don't mind work at all, it's just the hour long drive there that I hate. I'm moving closer this month. I really hope that helps the 'I don't want to sleep' thing.

<3 this thread.
i don't understand it either. stayed up later than i should all my life, still can never get in bed. i'm kinda going on a life-discipline kick lately, trying to do what i need to do in a more timely manner. but i still don't see how i will change my sleep habits. The only time I can go to bed on time is when I sleep with my gf, who i'm in a long distance relationship with for prob another year, so that doesn't help me now. The only idea i have, is something i thought of for studying. I can never study when its not crunch time, but i need to this summer for a standardized test. So i go sit in my basement, where there's no tv, and don't bring my computer, only my ipod and my book. Down there, studying isn't so hard to concentrate on, because its the best available thing. i need to find a way to do the same thing for sleeping but don't know how. |

I have this problem, have for a long time. I find that it's worse when my wife is out of town and my normal routine of going to sleep with her isn't there. I will stay up till crazy hours of the morning doing mindless [censored] on the internet. You ever get that feeling at 4AM that you've seen everything there is to see on the internet?
I find that when I read, meditate in low-light environments or do some simple mundane task (tidy up, fold clothes, re-make bed) I am able to fall asleep a little easier. I find that it helps to pick a time at night when you turn your mind off, usually 30 minutes before your target bedtime, no more thinking about anything, no ideas you have, work, something happening tomorrow etc. Just think about nothing, only the thing you are doing right then, brushing your teeth, folding your pants, petting your dog. I think the most important thing is to pick a time you want to be in bed and sleeping and plan accordingly, actually stop doing all of your useless crap and begin that zone out period before you plan to be asleep. |

[ QUOTE ] t, "do people do this b/c they feel that they are missing something when they are asleep?" This is one thing I was hoping to get at with this thread. There's some innate desire in me that makes me want to do this. I rationally know many times that I won't really get anything out of the thing I'm doing and will be MUCH better off just sleeping, yet I still at some level am compelled to keep myself up. Every rational and logical part of me, however, knows that going to bed is the right thing to do. [/ QUOTE ]This describes my thought process/feelings about the matter exactly. [/ QUOTE ] yep. i struggled hard with this for the past few years. being in a serious relationship has been very helpful (i start watching something dumb or reading 2p2 or whatever. when she asks what are you doing? and i dont have a good response i usually scuttle to bed). however, random nights when we aren't sleeping together im up at 230 am for no reason, even though im exhausted and have a big day tomorrow. for a while i thought i was putting the next day off as long as possible, but its not the case. tomorrow i get to golf and hang out and have fun. im excited for it. i just dont want to get into bed. glad to know im not the only one. |
