Mile time seems very easy compared to the other components.

[/ QUOTE ]Disagree...I don't think I'll ever have a problem doing 30 pushups, but even now in decent shape I probably only run a 7 minute mile or so.

I bet lots of ppl would struggle to do 30 "legit" pushups.

[/ QUOTE ]Really? This seems like the easiest part of the test for me.

for adults I'd say 8 minute mile
benchpress body weight
8-10 pullups
30 situps no stopping
8-10 minutes on rowing machine at a moderate speed no stopping.

Doing that would be a 'passing level' of fitness.

don't want to get too much into physics again, but won't the difficulty of pushups depend on height (holding weight constant)?

1) Bench 1.5 times bodyweight
2) Run 1.5 miles in 10 minutes
3) Touch the rim on a basketball goal
4) Leg press 2.25 times bodyweight
5) Swim 700 yards in 12 minutes
6) Do 40 pushups
7) Run 300 yards in one minute
8) Touch toes
9) Through a basketball 75 feet (from knees)

[/ QUOTE ]

this is pretty hilarious. 1.5 miles = ~2400 meters, which is like 2500 yards i think. that means you have to run a mile and a half at almost as fast a pace as 300 yards. completely ridiculous.

[/ QUOTE ]

1.5 miles in 10 minutes is the same pace as a 6 minutes 40 second mile. I'm much closer to that than I am to the bench press or swimming marks.

At the same pace as the 300 yard sprint, the runner would finish 1.5 miles in 8.8 minutes.

Maybe the expected 300 yard run should be quicker, but I don't think the 1.5 mile expectation is completely unreasonable.

I dont think swimming should be included, isnt there a lot fo practice/form involved with being able to swim efficienetly? Just becuase you may not have form, doesnt mean you arent in good shape?

i can do all but 1 . I can bench like 135, asking me to do 300 is pretty outrageous. i think i can still touch rim, but i def couldnt dunk.

You're an in shape 200 lb guy and you can only bench 135?

it depends on your definition of "fitness" ... a lot of people are now including cordination, flexibility, etc, as part of overall fitness.

This list is garbage. How in the hell am I going to touch a basketball rim, when I'm 5'3? I also think benching 1.5x your weight is hard for anyone who hasn't worked out for awhile.

[/ QUOTE ]

Of course its hard for anyone who hasn't worked out in a while...its a list of things that a FIT MAN could do.

well, ya, but in this instance, with swimming, I think its like golfing, you may be a super athlete, but if you havent worked on your golf swing a lot, your not going to be as good as someoen who has, even though you may be in way better shape. Ie., if its walking on a balance beam, something anyone with good co-ordinatino and flexibility can do with little to no practice, thats a good test, but swimming practice is more important. but I dunno.
