[ QUOTE ]
you do realize that thousands upon thousands of animals are killed each year harvesting vegetables/grains right?? better stop eating corn, wheat etc [/ QUOTE ] I choose to limit my animal consumption by not eating meat. Overall, I consume less, make less impact on the earth and cause less death than a meat-eater, plain and simple. You can continue to argue along the lines that I'm inconsistent because I don't abstain from participating in ALL animal death, torture, abuse. You can start going on now about my Queer Eye wool rug or about my car's tires or the pesticides used to produce my vegetables... But the simple fact is my vegetarian lifestyle reduces the overall death and misery on this planet. |

[ QUOTE ] Elaine, If I remember correctly from another thread you own a cat. Do you feed your cat meat? [/ QUOTE ] First, no one "owns" a cat. Second, cats are carnivores, humans are omnivores. A cat cannot survive without meat, humans can. [/ QUOTE ] Yes, but humans can survive without cats. |

Side question that has nothing to do with politics or choosing sides, whatever - serious. What would happen if we didn't kill any animals in the U.S. for one year?

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] People can be pro-choice without participating in abortion whatsoever. People cannot be meat-eaters without participating in animal torture. Thinking that an act should be legal is VERY different than actually participating in the act. [/ QUOTE ] My Uncle is a vegetarian, but he is pro-my right to eat meat. I fail to see how what you said is any kind of real distinction. [/ QUOTE ] Do the Venn diagrams of my argument. Then see where your uncle falls. Alternative: look for the words "all" and "cannot" and reinterpret my statements. I think you misunderstood. |

People cannot be meat-eaters without participating in animal torture. [/ QUOTE ] Elaine, if I see a deer in the woods and shoot it in the head (i.e. it dies instantly), is that animal torture? |

[/ QUOTE ] Did you just tell him to look for the word "all" in this post? [ QUOTE ] Interesting analogy, though not convincing. Inappropriate hijack. Here's why: People can be pro-choice without participating in abortion whatsoever. People cannot be meat-eaters without participating in animal torture. Thinking that an act should be legal is VERY different than actually participating in the act. [/ QUOTE ] |

I think they can invite you over without prior warning because you don't have any specific diet requirements and they are serving you everything you can eat. If they are serving really oddball vegetarian/vegan dishes, then they are inconsiderate for not giving fair warning. However, for you to invite them and purposely serve meat dishes knowing they don't eat meat is rude and ultimately purposeless. That said, you don't have to pretend that you haven't noticed that meat is gone and you don't recognize any of the dishes before. Instead, you might as well make the best of it and ask WTF you are eating and try a little of everything. Hopefully at least one of dishes tastes OK and you can stuff yourself with it. Ideally, there also will be some alcohol after the dinner and you will forget your hunger after a few drinks on an empty stomach. |
